The story of Prospero has ended
With peace among old friends and a new love
that has sprung from the plot of Prospero
and has passed his tests of love's sincerity
Murderous plots have been averted by plan
with the help of the spirit Ariel
who is about to gain his earned freedom.
Caliban and his new friends are shamed,
for they did not succeed in his murder.
All in all it was a happy ending.
This was my attempt at blank verse. I'm not sure it went so well!
At the beginning of Act III, Prospero made Ferdinand do hard labor in return to see Miranda. He did this so that he could test his love for his daughter. Ferdinand passed with flying colors and Prospero agrees to let him marry Miranda. Stephano, Trinculo, and Caliban are foiled by Ariel in their plan to murder Prospero while he is resting. Prospero has Ariel break the spells, so that the other characters on the island, as well as the boatswain and the master. A reunion of old friends, family, and foes explains what events have taken place. Prospero has Ariel do one more job before he is free and that is to get them back to Milan, and catch up with the rest of the royal fleet. I was surprised that this whole story took place in 3 hours. I did not remember this fact from the last time that I read this play. That seemed all very fast for me. Three hours seems such a short time to get vengeance, forgive, and resolve all the issues that had been building up in the twelve years since Prospero's exile.
I wish the Bard would have made it longer,
because the end was not enough for me.
I agree, Chris, the end did seem sudden.
I wanted just a little more drama.
Maybe a little more of a climax.
It seems as if he ran out of time and,
had to hurry up and end the story.
