I work across from the Smithsonian Castle and the National Mall. The city has begun preparation for the inauguation.

Note the baracades that have been placed in between the crosswalks as the city prepares for the January 20, 2009 inauguration proccedings. Eventually these will be used to block the streets.

This is pretty cool, Leslie. I've been reading up and a friend of mine also lives in D.C. and he said he's storing up food and supplies, so he doesn't have to leave his apartment all weekend.
Sounds incredibly annoying and exciting.

I was thankfully out of town for the entire thing and did not return until 10:30am yesterday. It was good to be away from the city. It sounds like your friend had the right idea as well. One of my coworkers was planning on going down, but the cold and crowds kept her away. Instead they had a "viewing party" from the comfort of home.
