The Great Debate

| | Comments (3)
I can not count the times I've spent during lunch, in the hallways, or online in a forum debating with someone which platform is better. To everyone involved, it was a worthy discussion. The main points I used to, and still do, think are the major selling points of PCs are: controls and mods. I don't care how good you are with a controller, someone out there is exceedingly better than you with a mouse and keyboard. Mods are what drive the community to make new exciting things. Things like Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress and Team Fortress 2. Even Left 4 Dead has it's root as a Counter-Strike mod. Consoles will always simplify what last gen PC's have already done. Meanwhile, people who game on PC's will continue to develop and create.

Questions:
What platform(s) do you prefer?

Are you more comfortable with one control scheme over another?

I grew up playing Nintendo almost exclusively with my family. We did have a few computer games, namely Myst, Castle Wolfenstein, and some educational math games, but our collection of Nintendo games greatly outweighed the computer ones. For a while, my sister and I even had a subscription to Nintendo Power. With the advent of the PlayStation, my family made the switch and has mostly kept the PlayStation as our gaming choice, complete with the PlayStation magazine for awhile. I do have a Nintendo DS and some various computer games that collect mostly dust (i.e. Rollercoaster Tycoon). Since my little sister is heading towards a career in the comics and gaming industry, she has recently switched to another gaming magazine that covers all consoles; however, I am not sure if it also covers computer games.

Getting back to the questions, I do feel more comfortable with the PlayStation scheme. Taylor mentioned Resident Evil and the character-related controls, and I love them despite their frustrations when running down a hall. I can understand why this game would not translate to the computer very well.

Taylor also mentioned some other aspects that I think are worthy of another look. She states that computers are for adults and consoles are for children. I do not believe this to be true, and I think that we will see a shift in this opinion as this gaming generation grows up. Taylor also talks about consoles being a multi-player experience while the computer is a single-player experience. This deals mostly with players in the same space and not online gaming. Gaming in my family has almost always been an experience with each other. We often took turns playing single-player games and had fun guessing who could actually complete the big jump or defeat the end boss. My limited experience with computer games has been alone, except for the game Chip, which my friend and I used to play together at her house. I hope this answers the questions and offers a little insight into my gaming experiences.

I don't agree that computers are for adults and console for children either. In some cases, it's quite the opposite. For one, my mom played the original Nintendo AND Super NES with me while I was growing up. And once I reached a certain age (around 10 or 11 I think) I developed an interest in PC games as well as console. I hate that there's even a dividing line. There's no reason why someone can't like both.

Matt, I prefer playing most games on my Xbox 360... I enjoy action/adventure games, RPG's and Sports titles on this console because I think that controls for these games on the PC are confusing (like using the 'W' key for walking forward, etc.).

I also have a DS, but because my hands are so big I have a hard time playing alot of the games because the unit is so small... which is why I haven't bothered to buy a DSi or anything because they're even SMALLER!

I think that PC's are GREAT for first-person shooters though. The mouse is way better and more accurate for targeting...
