Catcalls at Commencement

Today at Commencement, mention the current taboo "war," and you get people on all side hollering their protest or support for the war. U.S. Rep John P. Murtha brought up the current issue during his commencement speech.

One angry parent called out saying that this was graduation. He felt that Murtha was bringing up his "agenda." Supporter of the war and the soldiers fighting for freedom, responded that what Murtha was saying was the "truth."

The rest of the audience, family and friends of the graduates understood that Murtha was biased, but they focused instead on honoring the graduating seniors. They applauded to quiet the warmongers.

Murtha redeemed himself by generalizing that patriotism didn't necessarily mean supporting the war. It could be sublte acts and sharing reverence for freedom and democracy.

The banners of the past hanged around the parameters of the Sylvatti gym. Doctoral Honoree Mary Lou McLaughlin advised the graduates and the crowd. She said, "Passion compensates for lack of expertise."

Sure a fiery few showed their political views, however the passion of the graduates who strived to follow their dreams and vocation were not overlooked. 2006 Class President Justin Norris challenged his class to be examples, to experiment and to cherish life.

From where I was sitting, I couldn't see who was talking.

It seemed to me that Murtha fairly quickly and adeptly moved to the topic of bi-partisan co-operation, thus evoking a strong ovation, which served to close the issue.

I was sitting from the back so I saw when people started getting up and agreeing and disagreeing with others...

It would be nice if Murtha addressed the graduating students rather than his own political ambitions.

Congressman Murtha is a disgrace. He is acting like your typical classless Lefty. Who wants to talk about inappropriate issues at inappropriate times because it is all about them.

This was a day to honor graduating Seniors not allienate half the audience and promote your own biased self-interested political view of the Iraq War.

By the way, don't tell the U.S. Soldiers they are "failures".

These photos were taken by U.S. Soldiers serving in Iraq.

Ohhhh how wrong the Left and the Left-leaning media will be shown to be.

History will foreve show the Iraq War was the right thing to do and our U.S. Soldiers have done a phenomenal job in the most difficult situation. Even with all the mistakes our U.S. Soldiers are training the new Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police Force, providing security, and rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure, while Iraq's new Parliament compromises and builds their new Democracy.

Thank You U.S. Soldiers for reperesenting our country with honor and class.

Shame on you Murtha.

What a roach this Murtha. From what I've heard about US Marines, this old assold wouldn't make a pimple on a Marines ass. Vietnam ? He's got to be a fake. Cut and run cowards like him would have been shot in the back over there. What nutcake would invite a pregnant jerk like him to a graduation ceremony ? And then listen to his lefty junk.

Dear Mike,

Hello – How are you? It’s been… a long time. My congratulations on your graduation (isn’t it nice to be done??), and your acceptance into graduate school. I’m sure you’ll do very well, as you are very studious.

I’m sorry to write you out of the blue like this. After months of praying over this, I really felt prompted to say something. Perhaps it is too late, as you are already in grad. school, but I’ll pose it nonetheless. Please read what I have to say in its entirety…You’re welcome to delete the comment after you read it – It was meant to be a letter, but seeing that you’re no longer in PA, and I don’t know your e-mail address…

I wanted to tell you something that happened near the end of May…I went up to Seton Hill (on the 24th), to visit a very elderly sister friend of mine at Caritas Christi (I think you met her a few times – Her name was Sister Corinne. She passed away last Wednesday, Sept. 5th). After a nice lunch, playing cards, praying the rosary, and talking about life and God, we went to the chapel. (I think she was going early, to prepare for Vespers.) We were sitting on the balcony overlooking the chapel, and I was gazing at the tabernacle. I thought about how, when I was at Seton Hill, Sister Corinne had told me for a long time that she couldn’t wait until the Holy Spirit were put in the chapel. Then I remembered that you took a photograph of the tabernacle for an issue of Eye Contact and called it “Contemplation.” That struck me as being very profound, as I now have a new and greater appreciation (and hopefully, more of a love) of the Most Holy Eucharist and contemplative prayer. Suddenly, completely out of nowhere, this thought popped into my mind…

“What if Mike Diezmos were called to the priesthood?”

I was quite floored by the intensity and randomness with which that question seemed to pose itself. For a few moments, I pondered and reviewed it. I smiled, because I could see you as a priest, and then my mind went to other matters. But ever since then, I have thought of you on and off again. Finally, God has given me the grace to overcome my hesitance, since I haven’t spoken to you for about a year, at least. This message may be awkward, and it probably is. However, I feel very strongly about this – Strongly enough to type this and let you know.

I hope that you are not offended by this action. Perhaps you have thought or explored this path, perhaps not. I remember that you were very involved in the Faith, you have a kind and caring personality, much like some of the priests I know, so it is not hard for me to picture you in the Roman collar. Granted, I have no idea where God is calling you. The last thing I would want for you (or anyone, for that matter) is to end up in a vocation to which they are not called. That situation creates a lasting restlessness and unease in a person because they are not following Our Lord’s original plan, The Plan that would have lead them to the greatest inner peace and happiness possible on this earth. I would encourage you, as a friend, to think about your life and to which of the four vocations God is calling you (marriage, priesthood, religious life, or single). Remember: Our Lord calls us ALL to the holiness of the saints.

Quis ut Deus – “Who is like God?” That is what the name Michael means. I find it interesting that here in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, the most common name among the current seminarians is Michael. One of my all-time favorite saints is Saint Michael the Archangel, Prince of Church of Jesus Christ, Protector of the Church, the Jewish people, and the Most Blessed Sacrament. It was Saint Michael who rallied the other angels to fight against the Seraphim Lucifer (Satan) and the fallen angels who sided with him against God. I have found great comfort in praying to Saint Michael especially in times of distress, and invite you to do the same, for he is a most powerful intercessor.

If I never speak to you again, please know that I shall keep you in prayer, and I ask that many blessings and graces be yours from Our Great and Gracious Lord, as well as the constant protection and loving comfort from Our Blessed Mother Mary. If you ever feel inclined, you’re more than welcome to drop me a line and let me know what’s going on in your life. I thank you for your friendship during my time at Seton Hill and post graduation. Please consider what I have said, pray often, and trust and try to be open to God’s Most Holy Will. And if you ever find yourself questioning your purpose in life, ask Our Dearest Mother to guide you in your discernment. For, as a priest told me in confession not too long ago, it is through her you will discover your vocation. Take care, and may God bless you.

Yours in Christ in Mary,

Emily Kasky
