An Interview With Dr. Carole G. Parker

An Interview with Dr. Carole G. Parker

Dr. Parker is currently in her first year as a professor in the business department at Seton Hill University. Along with a seminar class she teaches Business Management as well as Gender Issues in the Workplace. When interviewing her I touched on different aspects of the writing process, publishing process, and her own experiences throughout her writing career.
Dr. Parker began writing with the attempt to publish mainly because it is encouraged within her profession and helped to open the door for future promotions. Her most prized published writing is a personal piece about her academic journey from carefree high school student to Carole G. Parker, Ph.D. She read about a publication opportunity in the Chronicle of Higher Education and submitted her article titled “The College Door”. Her story was edited and published in a book called Pot Likker Stories by Larry Grant Coleman and Deborah Peaks Coleman. Dr. Parker describes her piece as an inspirational story for teachers and students.
The writing process was not very difficult for Dr. Parker. She says that she simply wrote it longhand first and it just flowed together. When her writing was complete she had it reviewed by her peers prior to submitting for publication. Shortly thereafter notification was received that “The College Door” was worthy of publication in Pot Likker Stories.
In this particular instance the publishing process was pretty simple for her. Dr. Parker’s biggest problem was the fear of rejection. Although she has published both academic and creative pieces, Dr. Parker did speak from experience when saying that she feels that something edited by a book such as Pot Likker Stories is more likely to be published than an academic piece reviewed by your peers.
Regardless of the genre, Dr. Parker strongly believes that if you have a passion for writing you must go for it. She also highly recommends reading. “The more you read, the more you will enhance your writing. It doesn’t matter what you are reading, as long as you are reading something,” said Dr. Parker. When closing the interview Dr. Parker left me with personal quote that she lives by, which I will leave with you.

“When opportunity knocks, open the door. Don’t ever shut the door on opportunity because you never know where it will lead you.”
- Dr. Carole G. Parker

Dr. Parker is currently working on a piece called “CP Snacks ‘n’ Stuff and Knight Food For Thought: Teaching Students to Manage in a Classroom Setting” as well as a few others but if you would like to indulge yourself in “The College Door” or more of her writings, these are some of her most recent works:

Wikipedia vs. Wikinews

Wikipedia’s encyclopedia is an amazing tool because it allows anyone to edit and post corrections to any individual entry. While Wikipedia focuses more on current events Wikinews acts as more of a newspaper. Jimmy Wales made the comment that, "Wikipedia has always been very strong for background articles on things that are in the news," Wales said. "But on Wikinews, each story is to be written as a news story as opposed to an encyclopedia article." The newspaper style of Wikinews focuses on more original material rather than summarizing an article. Wikinews explores the depth of a particular article. Though, another positive aspect of Wikinews is that you can still edit the works of another writer. There is more information on this topic as well as a few related opinions of Joanne Glasner if you may be interested in exploring this subject more in depth.

Common Visual Design Elements of Weblogs

It doesn’t seem that there are many relations between weblogs and their individual design or technology. In my opinion, weblogs tend to act more as a journal for many individuals rather than an informative resource. Weblogs are posted for various reasons in order to attract a particular audience. More often than not I have found that weblogs are designed for a textual and factual experience rather than finding an intriguing image.

Color, type face, and layout design are all intriguing aspects of a weblog that you may want to implement. Often times the availability of these tasks are without cost and you may want to include these ideas in your own weblog. Design innovations typically make the reader more interested in exploring your weblog. If you are interested in further research and information pertaining to visual design of weblogs, please visit Lois Ann Scheidt and Elijah Wright’s site describing how to make many convincing arguments as well as tips concerning this subject as well as methods of implementation and opinionated discussion.
