AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The chapter starts in the word BLOG....you can only GUESS what my feelings towards THIS chapter ARE! haha

ANYWAY....First off...I NEVER knew there were THIS many different kinds of blogs.  I mean, of course you can blog about whatever youd like keeping in mind that anyone including future emplyers will be able to see it, but I didnt realize they had so many seperate blogs.  Theres "The Personal Blog", "Job Blogs", "Specailist Blogs", "News Blogs", "Advocacy Blogs".  Who knew there could be so many? I thought this was really interesting. And they all have a certain....special purpose.  But BY FAR....the Resume part is what caught my attention the most because of the fact that its about that time for internships and what not and a resume is needed.  So I enjoyed reading about it.  It felt useful!

Chapter 8

PERRRRRSUASION!!!!!!!

Ways to persuade....1.Logical Arguement 2. Emotional Appeal 3. credibility ....after reading this I honestly believe that I will write differently when trying to persuade my audience~!  I found this extremely helpful!  This has always been a problem I have had.  Even when its not with writing. Glad I have help now!

(400 word News Article)

The Setonian is a big part of Seton Hill University's campus.  It keeps everybody updated and informed on whats going on on the hill, and off the hill as well.  There’s always so much going on, always a game or a show of some sort or a special dinner of some kind…always something.

The Setonian has a lot of help with the craziness of all they have to do in order to get the paper out to the printer in time.  It’s a race for the clock, constantly keeping track of twenty articles and trying to pick from forty great pictures.  Its intense, and insane and chaotic, but they always manage.  The Setonian workers are very hard workers and are dedicated to what they do and they do what needs done in order to make things happen.

The EL200 Media Lab class that is offered at SHU is a course based on the life of the media.  It allows the students to help out and really interact with the Setonian.  They must have some part in each issue whether its copy editing, layout, headlines, pictures, articles, or whatever else it may be, they get to help out and it helps them out a lot as well, to understand and develop the skills that they will soon be dealing with in real life.

“Being a part of the Setonian is an amazing feeling!  There’s always so much to do!” said Shellie Polly, Media Lab student and Staff Writer for the Setonian.  There really is a lot to do.  And to make things even better, there are so many other people there always able to help you out in any way they can!

“This issue I got to write two articles for the Setonian!  Unfortunately I developed a problem, which taught me for next time, and there was only one published because the other couldn’t be opened.  Making mistakes like this helps me to learn what to do differently the next time.” Said Polly.

Being a part of the Setonian is not only an accomplishment, but a way to express yourself to the school.  If you think about it, the Setonian serves many purposes.  Just try to think of what this campus would be like without it.  No sports updates, or games schedules, no police blotters which is always fun, no fun stories or anything to read.  It wouldn’t be fun!  We love the Setonian and so should you!

(Midterm project ideas)

I am absolutely awful at thinking of ideas for this class' projects.  I am not creative, and not smart, and have never been able to think of something to do.  If I had to say something I guess an IDEA would be to....I honestly have NO idea.  Not only am I bad at thinking of ideas but I am bad with politics.  I could say possibly some sort of survey to see what the majority of the school is thinking, or something like that. Just get the school involved as best we can and try and up the chances of more people wanting to vote I guess.

(Spot Political News)

Once again I'm not sure.  Other than finding some sort of debate or speech or something near by that has plenty for us to discover.  I dont know.

(Comprehensive Reading Reflection)

EL200...or any of Jerz's classes in that matter, for some reason, dont catch up to me as quickly as other classes do.  I enjoy learning most of what we have talked about but have problems connecting with it.  ALTHOUGH...when I first started out in this class I was beyond confused with the whole "blogging" concept.  I literally did not understand it for almost a full semester.  And to tell you the truth I think I JUST NOW...like a couple weeks ago realized the LAST thing I was doing wrong.  So I was extremely glad to have it all down pat now!  ALSO, not guna lie...I enjoy blogging now....for the most part!  Ive gotten a hang of it and I really dont mind doing it anymore.  I still think I talk about the wrong things but I get really into what I do talk about. I dont know. haha But...since I have become so fond of my blogging, here are a few links of some of my favorites!

Hoo new ya couldnt trust yur spel cheker??

This is from another class I had to blog for but I found it really interesting...so why not!

More fun stuff!

I like having things SPELLED OUT FOR ME!!!!!

"Corporate Webwriting Needs the "You" Attitude."

Technical term being instrumental.  The message pretty much being "do what I say." Hmm...well alright! It mentions that this type of model of webwriting works fine for media like print, radio, or TV.  The reason being because the reciever has no time or chance or WAY to respond other than a possible letter to the editor or maybe a phone call. WOW...this is something I never thought about. But I think showing this is kind of a bad thing.  I think...with people knowing this, after reading this book they might think, oh...theyre right...they cant do anything about it right then so I can do and or say whatever I want...and all they can do is send in a letter, in which I can find, tear up and keep doing what Ive been doing. HAHA.

Im not sure people think this way but I mean its something to consider right?  If someone told you that you were going to work on the radio...wouldnt it be a bit of a relief knowing nobody can see you...and nobody can come in and like attack you or anything. I dont know...All of this coming just soley from the do what I say prospect.

If you knew "noone could touch you". Dont you think you would do whatever you wanted? Hmm...I know I might...MIGHT haha...as in...nothing ilegal. But really. Thats fascinating. How do you know the radio station you listen to every morning doesnt feel the same way and just do or make up random stuff just to stall time for whatever reason. I dont know if this makes sense. Im just typing what popped into my head after I read this. And here it is. haha

YES! Editing webtext! #1...DONT TRUST YOUR SPELL CHECKER....WHO KNEW THAT ONE??????/ NOT ME!! I Looove this book!

Ok..well I atleast found that part to be really interesting..other than that it seems like stuff I already know! Finally! A little redundant. But about the not trusting your spell checker...it says that all they do is compare what you've written with a list of words, and if they find the word on their list theyll say its ok.

I never knew that.  I jsut always assumed that they like...I guess literally read what you wrote and made it right.  So pretty much "spell check catches your obvious goofs. Thats the best you can hope for from a spell checker." Hmm....now...in the future...knowing this I will definately check my paper on my own and not always JUST rely on spell check.

Aw....memories of Newswriting! Active and passive....when we learned that in Newswriting last year....I waited and waited to see it again...and here it is!  I finally feel like I know something! haha!  Thats one thing I enjoyed learning..for some reason! haha

The most interesting part of this chapter was the part about the Anglo-Saxon words.  Which are words that are concrete and easy to visualize.  A quote they used that I really liked..and thought and thought about but couldnt hook onto was "Anglo-Saxon Old English tended to stay in the mud of the barnyard."  I took it as...It wasnt used by many...but when it was the people that used it learned and loved it and kept it with them. HA I have no idea. Obviously mud..and stuck at the barnyard.  Barns tend to not have many PEOPLE, and they dont always speak "proper" english.  I dont know. This is my enterpretation of it. Works for me! I just like the quote for some reason!

It also mentions that you should use simple sentences.  Something I wouldnt have thought you needed to do. You think, online, "more...technological, high tech and.."smart". Use big words and things."  Obviously not! Now I know!

Also, "avoid cliches like the plague" this is one intense quote!  Very serious! Also something I wouldnt have thought about.  This is one of those things I think you do without realizing.  I dont know maybe not. HA!  I love knowing this stuff!  It makes me feel a lot smarter! Hmm.

OOOOOOOOOO......organizing website content. YES! Something EVERYONE needs to know! First off...it talks about the numerous ways you can set up your front page!  I never realized how many options you had.  You could set up it alphabetically, numerically, chronologically, graphically or completely at random! Hmmm...(the randomness isnt neccesarily recommended, but the feeling of knowing its "allowed"...feels good! haha

They also pointed out how it is important to understand how visitors scan web pages.  I would have never thought about a readers perspective if and when I was creating my own web page.  When creating it I just think, what would I want to see when I open a page.  Which, now I realize, what I like....others might not.  SOmething to THINK a lot about.

I also liked how it said "treat every page like a front page".  This TELLS you, that just because its not the "main page" doesnt make it any less important or any less visited.

This chapter pointed out A LOT to me. Im glad I know most of it now! And so it continues.....

Guest Speaker State Senate Allen Kukovich

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

He talked a lot about the state of PA.  Ok, yeah were in PA, but I think, in my opinion, being from another state, I would have found this to be a lot more interesting if he didnt focus solely on Pennsylvania.  He made it seem....almost like he is sexist or racist to the other states.  I know that sounds funny, but thats the best I can explain it.

It was a good speech.  He did well on explaining why it is important to vote.  I think if I wasnt registered to vote, his speech might have, would probably have convinced me to register.

He brought up a few issues that need to be focused on.  A few being health care, education and recources, things like that, of importance.  He mentioned that many people, around 80% of people were supplied health care by their employers.  No, only 60% of people receive health care from their employers.  He pointed out that "we are becoming an unhealthy nation."

A quote I got from him which I really liked was "Vote with your eyes wide open."  This quote seemed to have a lot more than just one meaning. It really stuck out and I really liked it. It makes you think!

Well, this is portfolio ONE of the YEAR! Portfolios are meant to show everyone what has been going on in class pretty much.  Seeing how we blog about EVERYTHING we read or talk about, with this portfolio, it gets it ALL together allowing anyone, who choses, to read and see what we have been discussing and what this class is all about.  For many reasons!

Im not going to lie, I have never been a fan of blogging, but after seeing it all come together...it makes it seem like Ive actually acomplished something! And thats a good feeling!  Seeing all my work, not just sit there, but come back up again to help me see what weve done, as well as allow others to see.

Coverage: I find many things that OTHER people say...interesting!

I find things that other people say to be a lot more intersting and make more sense than anything I could think of.  Thank god for quotes...and smart people!

Timeliness: I suck at life...its a FACT of life :(

I cant believe I have been here a little over a year and still am SUCH a procrastinator.

Interaction:  Like I said, I enjoy reading what others think rather than...my own.

People have such better views than I do.  I enjoy reading about it and comparing it to what the heck I would think. HA!

Depth: I really got into this one!

There are many readings I find more interesting than others, therefore write a lot more about them!  I really liked this reading, it was a lot of information I was really interested in!

Discussion:   ONE...and its from the Prof.!  That's gotta count for something!

What I write isnt all that interesting...or..."interactive".  Obviously.

THIS IS IT!!!!!! The beginning of the END!!!!!!! UGH! Structuring your DANG website! O BOY!  Well, the first paragraph...has ALREADY told me A LOT more than I knew and will definately make my next website a lot easier...I hope!

It mentions the "Hit and Run". I found this very interesting....after I realized...I DO THAT! Uh OH!!!!! Well.....Its like seeing a newspaper article that doesnt have ANY breaks for paragraphs. Its just ONE big....loooooong...."boring" article.  You see it and right from the start dont feel like reading it.  There are a FEW sites on the web that do that.  Plus, sometimes I just want to see pictures or something. I dont know. But I do do it...and Im feeling a little guilty now, not guna lie! haha

THEN! It talks about the three principles of webtext.  This was fun knowing too! I found this book very helpful! But, the three principles are, Orientation: which includes minimalism and coherence.  Information: which includes clarity and correctness.  First of all, I never knew correctness was a word, second of all...this is interesting! And last but not least...ACTION! Which includesa postivie attitude (something I dont have so I guess Id mess that part up), and the "you" attitude which I DO have! This part was very interesting! I liked it!  I liked chapeter two the most! haha More fun information!

Kilian Intro & Ch1

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Ok, well for starters, I thought it was neat that the Latin word for "web" is "textus". Haha. That is neat!  Also...something else I found to be very interesting is that they said the web is a very different medium from print, TV, and radio.  I guess I never thought about it hard enough before but they really are really different.  I just looked at them as "yeah they all give us news in whatever way they can." But thats about it. Like, I knew the difference as in like, TV is watching and pretty much listening, radio is JUST listening, and print and online/web are reading and comprehending.  But they are still so different in so many more ways!  With the paper, its typically black and white...no color...the web shows lots of color to attract you to it more and more.  And in fun ways!

In the intro it also gets into a lot of advice thats always good to know! Then it says...how is your computer screen different from this page.  This is honestly something I would never even think of to do.  To compare and see the big difference.  Its incredible!

Chapter one talks about history, hypertext and interactive communication.  It mentions an article that an American scientist published.  "As We May Think".  It pretty much argued that knowledge should be far more accessible. I AGREE!!!!!!!! haha. This just makes life sound easier. haha. Sounds good to me.  I think when youre born, you should be given a rule book.. Tell you whats right and wrong. How to do this, how to do that. SOMETHING...it would have made life SO much easier!

Something I found interesting in Ch 1 as well was how they pointed out the "Is it Web or web?"  That was interesting to think about!

But BY FAR....my FAVORITE part of the chapter was when they mentioned how slow the primitive dial up system was.  Therefore they used to call it World Wide Wait. haha I think that was really funny! And...its sooooo true...computers make people extremely impatient.  I bet a day not on a computer would make people have better days, and end them less frustrated!  Hmm....something to think about!

I looove smileys!

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

I love smileys! I love using them!  I think they help out a lot with communicating in many ways! Theyre great! And the man who thought of them is great too! He should be as popular as facebook owners!  The smileys are used EVERYWHERE now.  In letters, emails, everything. I mean everything.  And it helps the person reading take the words in teh right way and whatnot.  Theyre great. Enough said!

OK, Well although I still havent exactly gotten the hang of this Im still trying to work through it all.  I really never realized how computer elliterate I was until now.

These pages deal with the style sheet which I didnt really "click" on.  But the way the show it and explain it seems good.  It shows you what you should see and thats always something you want to know after you try something like that.

Castro p 1-30

This talks about creating the inner pages of your website. I really liked pages 2 and 3 because it has the picture there explaining it ALL and telling you exactly what pages you will be finding this and that out.  It's great!

The book has a lot of pictures which helps a lot to see exactly what you should be doing.  It makes it a lot easier!  Saving the document as an html....was fine, I just missed it, because, Im slow. But I figured it out and things are better now.  It's easier once you do it once or twice.

Then...it literallt writes everything out for you.  But that was a little bit of a problem just because we werent suppose to "memorize" what we were doing.  We were supose to "learn" it.  Having the pictures there will the text written out with exactly what you need to type was extremely helpful in getting it done.  But delayed me in the learning process.

The style sheet I didnt understand..or couldnt accomplish.  I don't know why.  My slowness kickin' in again but I couldn't figure it out. So that failed me with gettin color in the webpage.  But still working on it.

"The goal of newswriting is to convey a lot of information efficiently."
"Journalists do this by using a spare, clean, direct writing style and organizing stories so that readers can get the main points quickly."
I think, although, like I always say, I should know this, I'm not the smartest one in the bunch, hence, when it's written out for me like this (haha) it kind of helps me more.  I guess because I think this is kind of spelled out for me and I like it that way. It's just easier because of the brain power I have or lack there of.
I also learned a lot about ledes in this chapter which was also good for me!

"The reporting process is about going from ignorance to knowledge." This quote stuck out to me...I thought it was kind of funny!  In my opinion...Id be stuck in the ignorance area. I would be the one to mess up and not make it to the knowledge and this quote would change haha. But I do think this quote helps me.  I see it as You start out knowing nothing and finding out EVERYTHING!

"In a tragedy, never ask a victims family, "Hpw do you feel?" This is something I guess I would have figured out if it ever came down to it. (I hope) But I am glad it was in this book, because now I know this for sure, and hopefully I wont be faced with a problem of missing this someday. This helped me greatly!

SNSG Ch 3 Who knew? Geez!

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Any student journalist who says, "This campus is so dull. Theres no news here," simply isnt looking, really stuck out to me because of the fact that thats pretty much what everyone says about SHU.

Seeing how this is a small campus and just about all the people I know hat it here bacause they say nothing happens, and its boring or "dull".  Well coming from a small SMALL town I am very use to it.  And to me, I find tons of things going on or happening.  But thats just me.  Maybe its because Im from a small town, maybe its the journalist in me. Who knows.

I also found the interviewing your sources and getting information from them quite interesting.  It says you have to or you should get their email, cell number, campus address and so much more.  I never realized how "nosey" you have to be.  Or things you have to ask for just to get some answers. How do you make the feeling of "bugging them" go away?

I honestly don't even know what to blog about.I am absoltely speechless! People areso rude and immature and obsrud and stupid and SO many words i cant say.  After reading this article I was in the worst mood ever.  I wanted to do something about it. I tried to get to that site to check things out but I dont have a my space account. Things like this should be stopped...there should be some kind of blocker for any rude comments like that.

People need to grow up and the parents of these kids and all kids allowed on the internet should always be aware of what their kids are doing online.  Things like this happen every day Im sure and it shouldnt. I really don't know what to say.

Watch what you put where!

"It's almost like googling someone."

This is the quote that made perfect sense and explained everything perfectly in yhr "when teachers go wild on the web" article.

People don't realize it but sites such as facebook and my space really are just like googling someone. When you google someone it's quick, and easy.  You get a bunch of options and can see it all.  Facebook or my space is the same way.  The only difference in googling a person and facebooking them is that on facebook or my space you have the options of what pictures you want up, what pictures you allow yourself to be tagged in, what information you provide for everyone to see and much more.  Although they give you the option of having your page private, more than likely theres going to be someone that will be able to find their way around it if they want to bad enough.

If they want to make things easier on themselves they could send you a friend request...which most people I know accept even if they don't know them...and they can very easily access anything and everything about you.  Theyll know it all. If they cant get you to accept them or don't even want to try, they can type your name in on google...and they will have many many things to choose from.

Long story short, watch what you say on friends pages, watch what information you put anywhere, watch who you are friends with...stay cautious.  Don't like...be scared...just cautious!!!!!!
