YES! Editing webtext! #1...DONT TRUST YOUR SPELL CHECKER....WHO KNEW THAT ONE??????/ NOT ME!! I Looove this book!

Ok..well I atleast found that part to be really interesting..other than that it seems like stuff I already know! Finally! A little redundant. But about the not trusting your spell checker...it says that all they do is compare what you've written with a list of words, and if they find the word on their list theyll say its ok.

I never knew that.  I jsut always assumed that they like...I guess literally read what you wrote and made it right.  So pretty much "spell check catches your obvious goofs. Thats the best you can hope for from a spell checker." Hmm....now...in the future...knowing this I will definately check my paper on my own and not always JUST rely on spell check.

Too true! Spell check isn't always a good friend to have. I once read a story in which a student was writing his paper on Washington, DC in Virginia. Unfortunately, every time he went to spell Virginia he spelled the state wrong, but managed to spell a similar sounding female body part right. Needless to say, the English teachers had quite a good laugh over the kid and spell check was by no means his friend at that particular moment!

Spell check can be quite the bugger. I learned early on that spell check is unreliable. While it may catch obvious mistakes, many mistakes are left as they are, and it's up to the author to proofread and correct them. I'm glad Kilian was able to help someone out =]

Spell check is the first step on the road of revision. It's a good way to catch some obvious mistakes, but as Maddie said in her example, it doesn't always catch everything. A good idea that I've done, and that Kilian talks about in this chapter, is to print your paper out and read it out loud to yourself. This way you can mark it up if you find a mistake, it gives you something visual that you can feel and touch, and it gets you away from staring at the computer screen which, at 3am, makes it tough to revise with a word processor sitting in front of you.
