In ch. 13 they talk a lot about the fact that you cant publish anything accusing someone of something. Well, lets say, someone is accused of something, thats news. So could that be reported? Could you literally say "So and so was accused of murdering blah blah."? I mean its true that youre not suppose to report false information RIGHT? Or am I understanding everything wrong? But if you were to say that, it wouldnt be false, because they really were accused of doing something and thats exactly what you said. If you said they did it, then thats a whole other story. That would be false information and you cant report that.
Well, my questions is...I got assigned an article for the Setonian about a RUMOR. I was terrified haha, not guna lie. Well I went for interviews and found out the rumors were 100% false. Well thats what I wrote my article on was the rumors being false. Well, the assignment was to report it whether all the information I found out was true or not. Where does that come in to this whole situation? I was just curious because of the fact that I really thought you were allowed to report anything false. You could find a way around it but could not report anything false.
Well, Im not saying anyone is wrong, I just wanted some clerification. Maybe its because this is the real paper and my article was just for the school paper and maybe they dont have the same rules? I dont know...just thinking out loud.
I thought it was kind of funny actually. And I was dying to know the answer. Haha Sorry this whole blog is a question, I was just intrigued. haha
Fun stuff!!!!!!
Almost done with the book :(. But I feel like Ive learned a lot so Im glad I read it! Im super pumped to make my own website now, and I NEVER thought I would be saying that! Thanks Krug!
Well I never understood the specification in the time alotted for a usability testing for a website. In the beginning of chapter 9, Krug shows us a prime example of what certain amounts of time mean. For the assignment we had, that was obviously not the REAL observation for usability testing that you would use for a serious or BIG business. I mean, we used the correct steps and what not, but I came to find out that it is a bit more serious than it was in class. Thats good to know!
The tips about "true things about testing" really intrigued me! I found that very helpful. It really pointed out the importance of testing your site. I thought that was just to see what people liked...but its really a lot more than that. You need to test for many things, make sure your site will stand up on its on and be able to ast and give the users what they need or what they are looking for. The graph of "Traditional Testing and Lost-Out-Lease Testing also found a way to help me out some. It tells you how many testers you should have and the difference between the two amounts. Which I didnt realize. Hmm....Then he even showed a sample test session. Now thats amazing...and SO helpful! It also points out that you should review the results right away. Something I didnt know. I mean I still did it, cuz I was an assignment, but still, I didnt realize that.
These chapters had so many great examples that were surprisingly easy for me to understand pretty easily. Not only did I actually understand them, but I was able to apply them to the work I do, and now I know for the next time I have something like this to do whether its testing or creating the site, Krug has helped me out a lot.
WELL....when I started out in this game, I was given more information than I have in any other IF games I have played. In the beginning it tells me the room Im in and that there is a desk and a few other items. Well, I remembered the whole "examine" deal from class. Well it helped, I started with examining the desk. Then they threw a curve ball at me and mentioned a "secret". I was intrigued! I had to find out the secret!
Another item in the room was a box, I examined the box, didnt really find much out. Somehow....really SOMEHOW haha a journal came about, and mentioned a "mystery". They said that hopefully they would be able to unlock the mystery. Well....little me...all confused and left out.....I had no idea what to do next. It also mentioned a boy named James, they said how can we punish him with this knowledge. SO.....Im thinking James knows something...so I have to go find this kid.
Soooooooo......I went a direction....to find James and get some info....and got to the lobby. Next I was in a courtyard with a building reading Bethlehem Hospital Administration. The next thing I know Im in a horse drawn carriage. So....the driver asked me "where to?"! I tell him a direction....next thing you know Im in the lobby again...obviously NOT in the wagon anymore. Ugh...Im getting super confused at this point, but THERES JAMES!!!!!!
I did what I thought I had to do...and I questioned James. Well James had some serious issues. He was super nervous about something and all he said was "I dont feel I am qualified to answer that." or "I dont know sir, I dont know." UGH JAMES!!!!!!
Next stop...ARCHIVES.Nothing there for me. Going on an hour fifteen at this point. Ugh...who woulda thought. I guess I just dont get these games. I dont understand what were suppose to do. Maybe if like...it said something like the goal of this game is to find the key to the chamber and open the chamber or something like that. I guess I just need to learn how to master these games a little better...or at least learn to read them right so I can make it further after not getting anywhere for SO long.
I thought James was the key to some major information...I think I questioned him for like ten minutes and just couldnt think of anything else to ask. I just didnt know anything to ask. Then after not succeeding with James, I tried to go to other places and I just couldnt make it there. It kept saying that going the way I was going would throw me off a cliff or something I dont know. All I know is I didnt want to fall off a cliff.
When I managed to make it to the Hospital, I couldnt figure out how to get there. I was all of a sudden in a horse and buggy. Didnt know how I got there or how to get out. I pressed the direction I was told the hospital was and that just got me back to the lobby.
I dont know....maybe Im like James...maybe Im the one with the issues haha. All I know is these games just dont like me.
Like the rest of the chapters, Krug does a good job of explaining how things should be. How easy it should be for the user.
In this chapter he introduced the "tagline", then he informed us thats theres nothing better than a good tagline. That just goes to show you how important a tagline can be when creating a website. Thats where Id be stuck. Considering I dont have good creative skills. For a tagline its more affective if it characterizes the whole enterprise. This one little tagline needs to sum the whole site up pretty much. To the point that people know what exactly the site is for and what not.
BUT "Tagline? We dont need no stinking tagline"....taglines arent always necessary. It depends on the site. I did not know this. Sites like ebay, amazon, cnn, things like that....you already know what that is right? Well there ya go! No need for a tagline. If you go to ebay...you know why youre there.
I also loved that he pointed out TWO questions to ask yourself when you make your site.....1. Whats the point of this site? 2. DO you know where to start. These are two great questions..I never would have known to ask myself. But I they would be very affective.
In chapter 8 it said "Everyone likes ______." This was an eye opener as to like...what and how to make the site. Its just a reminder that youre the one that needs to not make your user think. Make your site the way THEY would like it, NOT the way YOU would like it. Thats something you can never forget.
Back to the mindless use of a site. Not needing to use your mind, or make anything hard for the user to get anywhere on any page. They say it shouldnt take more than three four or five clicks to get ANYWHERE. But in MY opinion...its not the amount of clicks I have to do, its the amount of CRAP I have to fill out in order to get to what I want. Ugh..that gets to be SO annoying sometimes I just completely give up, even if its something important, like a job application or some kind of loan thing, or anything like that.
I agree completely with the Omit needless words. It really does seem to be that a lot of the words are there to take up space or something, most of what you read is nothing you need to know to get to what you are doing or anything. It gets a bit redundant and extremely annoying, when seeing page after page of stupid type, huge paragraphs that mean nothing to you...are you even going to read it if it doesnt interest you? Probably NOT!
HAHA! I love the "Happy talk must die", it says if, while reading, you can hear a tiny little voice saying "blah blah blah blah blah" that needs to go. HAHA Well put!
Along with the needless words, I agree with Krug that the instructions should bounce. The example on the page was a perfect example. It had instructions then a question. Do you really think the people browing a website are stupid enough not to know how or why to answer the question? Or even that they are supposed to? I think they are very much equiped enough to figure it out all on their own and get done what needs done. You dont want your reader to think you think he is stupid now DO YOU?!
The example in Ch 6 of the mall, PERFECT. It walks you through...it shows you how specific and easy your site should be. That was a good example! I enjoyed it!
Then it pointed out the "Utilities" which is something you cant forget. Its extremely important for a website I think. I look for them all the time to help me get through a site. Never realized it 'til now...but still. ALSO...a search box...VERY IMPORTANT! I use the search box before ANYTHING. Its perfect for when youre in a hurry or if its one of those darn sites with the LONG BORING paragraphs you dont really need to know about. Yeah..search box...GREAT!
HA! Krug has so many great examples! Another one is...when you make a web site...think of a mall directory, the one that says "YOU ARE HERE", then it gives you all your options. Yeah...thats great too! Especially when you want these pair of shoes and its the last pair and the store is about to close. You run straight to the directory...DONT YA?!
Color coding was another good point he made. I never thought of that actually. But color coding certain things to show the user that they pertain to each other can be very helpful as well.

Krug's "Dont Make Me Think" is a funny and FUN way of learning more about the web and creating a web site. He gives you all kinds of perspectives to consider to help you put things in the right place to make it eye grabbing. And thats just what you need when making a website. It even has little funny pictures showing you where the person would look and what not. Its funny...and its what grabs you and makes you want to keep reading his book.
See...you dont think about it, but as hes telling us how to grab peoples attention...hes grabbing ours. Weird huh?! Or SMART!?!?!! :) haha.
He has a few goofy phrases that just make you giggle as you read, and then...as you continue to read...you jsut cant wait to get to the next quirk! Its so much fun! To me! But at the same time Im learning more about what I need to know to be better at making web sites. Its a fun and creative way and very affective!
He pointed out in the very beginning that when someone is looking at your web site you want them to know what it is for exactly. He said "you want someone to look at your homepage and say "Oh its a ___" But with any luck...shell say "Oh its a ____! Neat!" haha I thought that was funny but it also made me think...to think of what OTHERS...reading, or using my site would want to see, not what I think they would like or what I would like myself but make it for the people that will be using it. Just because you understand it doesnt mean someone else will. I mean YOU MADE IT...of course YOULL understand it and know where everything is and what everything does.
The whole "Dont Make Me Think" thing...is what you need to picture youre viewers or web site users saying. Create a web site...knowing...everyone is saying..."Dont Make Me Think". And if you think about it, you would want the same thing. The easier you can get ALL the information you need...the more your site will be used and ENJOYED!
Another quote I found was "We dont read pages. We scan them." And that is SO true! Who is going to sit there and read through pages of stuff that doesnt pertain to wheat they are looking for at all? I know I wouldnt. Put key topics and things that they can choose from if THEY feel that is somehow relates to what they are looking for. It would be a lot quicker and easier if you could just see what you were looking for summed up in a sentence or two and linked to more information for you. Its ALL done for you...so of course youre going to use THAT ONE!
After that it showed pictures that said..."What designers build, and what users see." For what users see, the entire page is blurred out except for a sentence or two. Having that visual, just made it even more believeable and understanding. This book is great!
Another one..."We dont figure out how things work, we muddle through them." haha TRUE!
Well...although I found intro-ch2 fun and fascinating...ch. 3 wasnt as much fun for some reason. It got into the REAL stuff haha. It was more writing and boring pictures, and things like that. Kind of lost my interest. But the headings to each paragraph kept me going! They are very helpful in of themselves!
I really like this book. I really do, I enjoy reading it, and I can open it up knowing Im actually going to enoy learning for a change!
I enjoyed Kilians book. He did a good job explaining everything, telling how and why this and that should be used. It gave good information on making a resume, it told you exactly what to have which is a definate big help! I honestly dont know what I think he should change...if anything. I mean...I guess he could elaberate a little more on some things that may be confusing...to...some people. haha...aka...stupid people like ME! But overall he did really well on it all!
Ok...this class is more needed than youd think...well it was more than I thought it was. I came into this class thinking...when am I going to need to know this? Well...you have no idea. This class is EL 236...Writing for the Internet. We do a lot of HTML work which is extremely helpful...who knew?! It also helps with writing for the internet and discovering so many new things, its amazing! There is a lot of blogging...but thats just Jerz...not a bad thing, blogging...at first..I hated it...but now, believe it or not, I actually enjoy blogging...most of the time. The more you blog, the more you start to comprehend things in a way that you are more capable of understanding...its kind of like a...you help yourself by blogging. Thats my opinion. THEN...theres the portfolios we are assigned...every now and then. I know..my reaction wasnt that great...but once again..in my opinion...jsut like blogging...you learn to love it! haha

This blog was definately one of my ALL time favorite blogs ever! I was very proud of it! I took a lot away from the reading and really enjoyed blogging about it! I found a few direct quotes in the section...mostly because it was a speach...well..not a speach but it was a conversation...so it was pretty simple finding quotes, so I dont really give myself credit on that one!
OOOO..I found another! ..here is another blog I used a direct quote in! A good one too! Brought many things to my attention...it was interesting!
Timeliness: This is the earliest EVER!...I was very proud I got this one done so early! This is the earliest I have ever turned in a blogging assignment. A whole two days early!
Interaction: YAY! , Finally! , WOW...what spell check can do to people!
Depth: Best yet, this is the BEST I have ever done in a blog in my opinion. I ended up really getting interested in it and I ended up finding a lot to talk about!
Same goes for this one this one is about the same story but still...the fact that I found that much for TWO blogs for ONE thing...is really exciting!
These past few..I have been really impressed with! I was NOT planning on finding ANYTHING to talk about for this blog...but LOOK! I couldnt believe it, but once I got started I really got into it and ended up finding a lot to talk about. Once I realized, you dont have to write about EXACTLY what you read, you can explore beyond the rhelmes of the story...you find a lot more to talk about!

In the Introduction, Dr. Jerz mentioned to us last year that he was going to have a video game class...I thought...OOOO...easy A. Well...nothing is "easy A" with Dr. Jerz. I considered the class then realized...maybe its just not for me, I wanted to go more into a class that I NEEDED to know things about rather than just "fun and games"..which is what I THOUGHT that class was going to be.
I now realize that the video game class would have taught me a lot more than what a video game is, does and so on. It would have been very helpful. I wouldnt have realized that if I hadnt read this introduction. Its something to consider.
There was a quote I picked out of the intro that was "They were excited that they could talk to a machine, and even more, that the machine could talk back to them."
Ok...at first...I laughed. But then..I read this quote again and again and my end response to it was...WOW! That is SO true! I was excited to hear..in more of "fun" terms...that people are that amazed and excited about the technology we have today. I guess we all kind of take it for granted now, but after reading this, it...in a weird way...opened my eyes to ealizing and appreciating more of what a computer can do. And how much it really helps you. And not just computers but all technoogy...it is all great help!
The fact that this game was ALL text, and to make any action you would have to type out what you wanted to do and if it worked it did it, and if it didnt work, it didnt do it. Honestly...how many people now a days would be willing to sit down and type in words to make a game do something. Its weird to even think about. But pretty neat! I really found that to be quite fascinating!
Another quote...right at the end that I really liked..or thought was interesting I guess was..."Computer mediated storytelling has always been about what you do right here and now, while you are sitting at the keyboard. Thats where the story comes from. Its not about what somebody else did, once upon a time, in a land far far away." This is a quote that made me think.."right here and now at the keyboard"...what story could I be telling...ok Im blogging..but thats besides the point. Really...think the next time you are typing at the computer...whether its facebook or a quick hello to someone..pay attention to what you do and say. Its neat to think about!
Now the "Scott Adams Speaks" section...brings in the creator of Adventureland, and he pretty much just talks about it pretty much just explained WHAT the game was, how it worked, and things to that matter. Then he continues to go into a few stories about it. It got pretty interesting. Not as good as the intro though. I didnt find many quotes in this section that really made me think..WOW...what if...or thats really neat. But it did have a few interesting areas that I didnt mind hearing about. He did mention..in the very beginning...how SMALL the memory on computers used to be. And being the person with ALL these PAPERS and PICTURES...Id die without the memory our computers have today.
And last but not least, the Parser Fun part...well it wasnt as interesting as the intro either...kind of just recapped some things a little.
But it also brought out a side of Adams we didnt really know about. There is a quote from him at the top of that page that talks about his feelings towards violent games. And he doesnt like them. Thinks the world would be a better place if we fought the common evils as a team. And I completely agree with him. I really liked that. I put it more towards everyday life and things and "technically" his is geered towards the game, but Im sure he meant it in the way I took it as well. And that was something I enjoyed learning!

Ok...I know the "Girls' Day Out" story isnt as intense as many stories there are out in the world right now...but given my options it really stuck with me.
This story doesnt use much personification...but it does show a little imagery. "Nostrils flared so wide I can see the red deep inside them." This is one example I picked out of showing imagery.
This story doesnt really show much of anything. Doesnt have personification, not much imagery, or alliteration, or illusionm or even irony. It shows meaning, and heartache and caring, and sadness and many emotional feelings. But nothing closereading "terms" could pick up on.
Everything used in this story has a way of grabbing the readers attention and bringing them in. They just cant get enough. This is able to capture peoples attention not only in the poem but in the rest of the clip as well. Like, all the different things you get to click on...all take you to a different place...that yet again...grabs your attention and you just cant leave. Or atleast thats how it was for me.
In the "poem" section...it starts out with a nice little story about these two sisters who love to ride horses. It proceedes to talk about one of their "days out" riding. It started to storm and things got bad. Then when you click the mouse...the words int he story fade away leaving just a few behind to read. It does this four times and leaves you with a message. The message reads "six of them...in riding boots...rotting under the plateau grass...two only bone in the mud beneath the wind torn fields." Then it starts to name off the names of the girls that were murdered...as a type of rememberance for these girls. Its ver sweet but also very sad. Now tell me this doesnt keep you holding on...and wanting more.
Well after that its the end of the "poem" section...the next thing to click is the "authors note" section. In this section it talks about how these girls...sisters...ended up finding their way to this particular stable. Of all stables...they found this one...the one that had girls getting murdered. It also has two pictures. A picture of each sister with their horse. This tells the story of how they found out about everything...then is continued...in to the...next click.
The next click you would...encounter...would give you the "shards". This is in an interesting form. Not sure I really understood it. I think this COULD be considered imagery...maybe. The words are in a shape...it tells more of the story...when youre done with that you click...the words go crazy and scramble to their next location..forming another shape. This continues for a while, shape after shape, and the story finally ends.
Although I never figured the shapes out...if I was even suppose to. And although I was unable to find the "close reading terms" through out the reading, it was very capable of catching and keeping my attention without it and thats the point of telling a story so Im all for it.
I think from this blog...and my two blogs before this one...it shows my reaction to this story in more ways than one. It really hit home, and being such a huge horse fan..it makes me think...what if I didnt like horses, and I wouldnt have chose this story, then I wouldnt have known about this and would have had a completely different reaction. Or if I even still chose this story but still wasnt a horse fan, I THINK there is SOME possibiliy of the reaction being different. But I could be wrong. I tend to be. So who knows!
I hate when I cant find what Im looking for :(
When I find something interesting...I know it right away! That is exactly how I felt when reading the "Girls' Day Out". Although it wasnt something I like to hear, it was interesting, and the fact that I LOOOOVE horses just made it even more grabbing...for me!
On the first page, not guna lie...it is a little boring, but I stuck with it, because...HORSES! THEN...off to the side it says..."TO BEGIN"....Im like OOO...OOOOOO....lets go! So...I clicked...and BEGAN! Theres three things to click on..the poem, the authors note, and the shards.
First off...the poem is the story about the girls loving to ride and this one day out they had...when they were having a blast..it started to storm...one sister fell off...the other sister looked...worried...but there was nothiing to see. While reading the story...your mouse is a HAND. Once youre done reading you click the mouse and the words fade away leaving a few. The rest of the words come back..and it does it again. It does it four times....and ends with a message. The message was..."Six of them...in riding boots....rotting under the plateau grass....two only bone in the mud beneath the windtorn fields." Then it lists names of the girls that were murdered. :( It was a very emotional way of rememberance and I thought it was very respectful and helpful in a way of families needing that to cope..or have their girls be remembered.
I DEFINATELTY DID NOT get exhausted and want to stop reading at ANY time during this story. And thats the kind of story I like...I want to LIKE reading it..not "HAVE" to.
And this did just that!
Well...I thought it was interesting..just like Shelley's "The Body", to see what image I chose first. The very first image I chose was the horse. The "Girls' Day Out" one. Horses are my favorite animal so I saw it and without a second thought clicked and roamed!
WOW! Clicking on a picture of a horse..."Girls' Day Out" its called, NEVER expecting to hear a story like the one I read. SO MANY things to click on, TONS of different places it takes you, EXTREMELY creative in SO MANY way! Really caught my attention...even going through reading it, I kind of started to want out, just because of the story, I felt horrible. I was sad. But I even more than wanting out...I wanted to know more! So I clicked and clicked and clicked! And every time I clicked I just found more and more out! AMAZING hypertext. In the top left corner it had words to click that would take you through ALL of those images you saw from the beginning. Its everything handed to you right there at a click of a button. You want more? You got more..just click. Its very affective!
The second image I chose to pick was........"Cruising"....looked somewhat interesting...I clicked it...once again...NOT expecting what I got. It opened up this screen...you click...and it plays this video...a girl is in the background talking...the picture got real big...I could tell there were words at the top of the picture but it was going at the speed of light I couldnt read it. After listening to the girls story...I moved my mouse...down OBVIOUSLY...and the picture DECREASED in SIZE! And when I kept my mouse DIRECTLY in the middle of the lower part of the picutre it DIDNT move. At this point the picture was far enough away I could read the words..then I spent another minute or two trying to figure out how the heck to get the next few words to show up...I finally realized all I had to do was move my mouse to the right...and it would gooooooooo. After I FINALLY figured ALL that out...I REALIZED..the words I was SO anxious to read.....was the STORY the GIRL was READING OUT LOUD TO ME! So needless to say I felt a little dumb after viewing this image. But it kept me busy, and entertained for quite some time. After all....it was real eas to figure out! So it was great ideas! So..again...good hypertext! It all led somewhere!
The THIRD image I chose was the number one...ooooooo....the picture got me! The Code Movie 1...one....it was BRAINWASHING. haha....After watching it I felt like someone had tried to brain wash me. That was the first thing I thought of haha. I even watched it 4 times. Hmm...WHY? haha...maybe I just thought it was COOL! But.........at the end...it gives you the option to "play again"....and after seeing that I wanted to see if it was already spelled out there or did they just type it it...if that makes sense. So I watched it a few times....and just couldnt manage to keep my eyes on the place it came up at. haha. But it was interesting. Not toooooo much hypertext like the rest but its still there. And thats what counts!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST....the FOURTH one I chose was STORYLAND!!!!!!! I got excited and wanted to hear some more stories so I chose this one!........and.....NO NO NO NO NO..NOT A FAN! First off...I tried clicking on the letters, nothing. I thought...there has got to be more to this...NOPE. It tells weird stories...and somewhat the same... it has ONE button at the bottom that says "New story"....and the truth is...THANK GOD that button was there. But I mean...I guess it showed some hypertext and thats the point. I SUPPOSE!
GOODBYE STORYLAND!
Well...For starters I found The Body to be extremely informative and detailed. It had plenty of explaination to help you if needed which is always the best! haha! Although there were a few parts I didnt like because of the simple fact of sounding cocky, because cockiness is a horrible quality I think, other than that I really enjoyed it. It was a great way for Shelley to tell a story by using an example like that. I picture, art, something that was so easy to figure out because it was ALL right there for you. I really enjoyed it.
The University of Yellow Wallpaper on the other hand, well I dont really have much to say about it. Other than I found it kind of boring. Unlike The Body where you click on a part of the body and it takes you to interesting information, The University of Yellow Wallpaper, you click on I tiny box with some color, not very apealing, and it takes you to a list of links pretty much, then you click again, and you finally get to SOMETHING. Not as much fun or factual or interesting as The Body. I wouldnt recomend this style. But thats just me and my way of reading and getting bored from seeing links, and links, so Im just like WHATEVER!
But The Body was great! Very informative, and easy to understand.
