Desert Places or Snowy Forests?

| | Comments (1)

In this poem there are so many condradictions its crazy! Kind of funny, but it makes it significant and even more interesting than the simple poem you see when you just look at it.  You see talk about snow which is very contradictory to the title of the poem desert places, also, woods are mentioned and normally, when thinking of a desert you don't necessarily consider woods being everywhere, nor is that the first thing that pops in your head.  Also, space is mentioned, yes, you picture lots of open space when you originally think of a desert, but when reading this poem, you may find yourself thinking more about actual space, like outerspace before you consider open space.  With so many things to consider in a poem makes the poem even better.  Its broad.  Its not soley focusing on one and only one thing.  I liked this poem!

Lets Complain!

OOOO!!!! Yes! Finally, getting to blog about our problems!  Or...not? Writing about a problem and complaining are two totally different things, darn I was looking forward to it!  Anyway, In writing about a problem Roberts tells us that our major purpose is to convince your reader that your solution is a good one.  Well that should be easy, as long as your problem is real, it should come with some sort of a solution.  But its not always as easy as it may seem.

The strategies were all very helpful but Roberts' "Writing about a Problem" paragraph was able to sum it all up in just a few sentences.  And with the organize your essay part, it tells you exactly how your paper is supposed to go, where and everything, that was very helpful.

The illistrative essay was a good example and easy to understand. And after reading Desert Places it was nice to be able to go back to the essay and compare and find the meaning to what the essay was telling as which made understanding and comprehending it even easier.  Being able to relate to a piece we read was great!

Princesses and damsels in distress

| | Comments (0)

It was interesting to see where the discussion in class on Monday led us.  Disney princess can very much relate to this play.  Each of the women are a perfect reflection of many Disney princesses we all grew up reading about and watching in our favorite movies.  Like many women the two sat around waiting for their prince to come but Constance was able to do a little more than the Desdemona and Juliet girls.  She wasnt the damsel in distress like Desdemona and Juliet were.  Noticing the difference and being the difference is huge for women and they must learn to act it out, and Constance is the prime example!

Wildcard:

Characterize this-I realy enjoyed writing about this mostly because I really had something to say.  I was able to realize a lot, like how important the character of a story is.  Of course everyone already knows and understands the importance of the characters but I was able to look deeper and understand even more!

Sonnet 73-I really enjoyed reading AND writing about this.  I actually had something to say and enjoyed giving my opinion.  I saw a lot of different things in Shakespeares poetry than I do in other poetry and I enjoy getting the chance to figure out what it is trying to say and express it.

The Women are the Wise

| | Comments (0)

In the play Trifles, the women are able to catch on to many things that the high authority men are not able to pick up on.  The men are going around trying to find evidence all around the house and even out at the barn, meanwhile the women sit there talking about sewing and regret not coming over to visit, and ya know..."girl things".  Well these "girl things" are able to lead the women to figure out that things are odd and or suspicious.  The men are looking for something to jump out at them and the women were able to dig deep into the story and find out things that the men would have never found.

In every story you see the men being the hero, the knight in shining armor, the ones to do the job and get all the credit.  This was a good story.  You are really able to be lead on and on to keep you hooked in the story.  You are forced to decide youreself who is right, the men or the women and who is the killer of Mr. Wright.  A good mystery is always a good thing!

In The Man He Killed, Hardy is able to show us the perfect example of the stupid things people will do and think is ok.  In a normal example of this, you see people fighting all the time, someone stole my girlfriend or boyfriend, someone cheated off me in class, someone stole my PS2, whatever it may be, so I think I'll kill them rather than fight for it.  Just get rid of them rather than fight them later, just save myself some time.  It's not right in any situation and Hardy makes us see that.  I'll say, it is a weird situation, friends can fight friends in games, or whatever it may be, but sitting down to have a dirnk with someone you think you could be friends with, and decide to kill him since you'll have to anyway, or at least will have to go up against him.  All theyre doing is trying to make it easier on themselves, so how is that fair?  It's not.

Although it was wrong, it was a good story. I didnt think I would find myself so caught up in it until I wanted to stop but couldnt, I wanted to see what was going to happen next and would he go through with it, would he warn him to be nice, what would really happen.  I liked it, you've gotta love the stories that draw ya in!

The Necklace

This was definately one of those stories that you cant really relate to that well but in some way can.  For example I would say the best someone could relate to this personaly is having someone close to them die and leave something memorable behind, like a necklace, for them to hold on to and remember.  Things like that can mean a lot to a person especially when its literally all you have left.

In this story, you are able to see the pain the girl is going through.  She is sad and depressed and you are very much able to get the feel of what is going on because of her pain.  It almost makes you feel the same at some points in the story.  You can see the meaning with this girl and can understand what she is feeling and why she is feeling it.  That leads to a good story!

OK, so scary movies are at the top of my list.  I mean, I love all movies but I really like scary movies. With a lot of the stuff I read, I for some reason always turn it into a movie. Ill catagorize it like I did with this one, and I'll act out the scenes in my head so its more of watching a movie rather than sitting and reading something really boring.

So, when I was reading this I got that fun, nervous, yet exciting vibe. I mean, it wasnt really like any other scary movie, it was finally more of somethin that noone had thought of.  A killer that doesnt know what the person he is supposed to be killing looks like, and really, if you want to write about a killer that kills for a living, you look for SVU (great show), but this was so much more. There were things at times that I had to try to catch on to, and things that I just wanted to yell at the guy, but, he didnt hear me.

When you can get a reaction like that from me, you know its a good work.  I love the stories that make you think and keep you guessing.  Although this wasnt one of the bests, it was a lot of fun to hang on to and I really enjoyed reading it for the most part!

I make everything I do like a movie, sometimes for fun, sometimes to make life more interesting, sometimes just because I think it'll make certain things easier.  And it definatley made reading and understanding "The Three Strangers" a lot easier!

Sonnet 73

Well I love this sonnet because it has the world twilight in it. Haha ok totally kidding, anyway...

I liked this sonnet because I had to close read it, or atleast do a lot of assuming and questioning which I enjoy because I get more out of the words as well as the sonnet.  I also get a better understanding and learn new words! :)

I thought the diagram was interesting, it kind of helped to show the connection between all of the quatrains.  I think with even more close reading I would be able to understand this sonnet a little better, but from reading it a few times, I really like it, the flow of it.  The last two lines were my favorite:

"as the death bed, whereon it must expire,

consumed with that which it was nourished by".

I think I liked this because it was condradicting when I first read it, the first sentence talks about death and the second talks about nourishment, which leads me straight to thinking of birth. But after reading it again, I noticed the word expire, then making the two the same, rather than being contradicting. I love things like that, when you can miss something so simple and get a completely different meaning from it. Just the loss of one word can change the meaning of the entire sonnet.

Roberts Ch. 5

Ok, so a little disapointed this chapter didnt have as good of a picture as the last chapter to help me out, but Roberts does a pretty good job describing everything, so its all good.

I think Roberts did a realy good job on showing how important plot can be.  The plot is everything, if theres no plot, then you dont have a story.  Many people know how to think up a plot, but do they know how to write about the plot itself?  Roberts shows us that you have to find the conflict in the story, and pretty much shows us the way.  He says "conflict is the major element of plot because opposing forces arouse curiosity, cause doubt, create tension, and produce interest".  With the conflict comes the reaction, everything youre looking for from the audience will start here. Along with getting the reaction from the audience, as Roberts says, knowing the conflict helps you to determine the plot.

His boy meets girl example was perfect. You are able to see the plot as soon as you see the conflict with the boy and girl. Its like a cycle, you determine what the story is about a lot of the times you can find that out at the very beginning or evern by reading the back of the book, then you find the conflict in the story, then it leads you directly to the plot.

AND I MUST SAY...dont like the story. Stupid people, gosh, the whole point of love is to compromise and make sacrifices for the other. WAKE UP! :)

I love reading about point of view.  There are many interesting things you can find with the different point of views believe it or not.  Roberts is able to show the who what where when why how and whatever else you want to know about point of view.  I have always had a problem pointing out point of view.  I have problems telling what point of view it is, but from watching tv all the time I was able to pick up that third person is when you refur to yourself as your name...or something haha. Like if I was answering a question in class and said Shellie thinks this....thats third person.  But thats about all I know with point of view.  I cant figure any others out. :( But anyway the point of that is that Roberts talks about how to write about it, but not how to figure out what one it is. SO....athough Roberts is great with his how to's, I think I'd need to brush up on a few things first haha.

But I really liked how Roberts is able to tell us about the conditions that affect point of view.  I think that is something that can really help when writing about or with point of view. Very helpful!

Characters have always been the focus of all stories.  I mean, what would a story be without any characters.  You're given a main character and back up characters. All of which can have a strong significance in the story.  Roberts is able to describe this significance, along with the udnerstanding of how to understand just about everything about the character.  With Robert's explanations and understanding of the characters, their traits, their words, how to tell how or who they are based simply on what they say or do.

Some people may find it hard to understand the character and their significance in a story, depending on their role of course.  For example, in those horror films when you are thrown back and forth from this person to that person thinking maybe thats the killer, oh no, well then it has to be that one, then it ends up being the biggest shock ever when you finally find out who it is, Roberts has his own way of figuring this out.  He also helps us to see and understand how to do the same thing ourselves.  If that is what we are trying to do, is confuse our reader or throw them off track, Roberts can help with any of that.  As well as, discovering your character and anything else you may need, Roberts does a very good job with explaining everything and makes it a lot easier.
