Williamsburg Day 6: The Quagmire

Ted Kennedy might have referred to today as a “quagmire” for the Rubino family. We didn’t really have a plan of attack, and tried to go at it off the cuff. We went out to a town called Newport News, which claimed to have a nice dock area and shops. Unfortunately we didn’t find anything of the sort…

But we did stop at Fort Euastis (I believe that was how it was spelled), which was not only a fully operational army base, but also housed the National Military Transportation Museum. The entire museum was filled with vehicles used in transporting troupes from the Civil War through today’s Iraq War. It was really quite interesting, and of course Dan and I made sure to get lots of ridiculous pictures, especially of the “experimental” transportation devices invented during the time period between the Korean and Vietnam wars. I couldn’t believe the time and money the military spent on trying to make jetpacks, flying saucers, and “helicopter platforms.”

After that we spent a majority of the afternoon driving around Newport News, looking at various buildings, stopping at various shops, but really buying or doing nothing. It was a good chance for me to snuggle up with my iPod Shuffle and enjoy the sweet sounds of The Futureheads. The highlight of the day came when we visited Kyoto.

Kyoto is a Japanese hibachi restaurant (like Benihana’s) only filled with chefs that know lots of puns. They had virtually the same menu as Benihana’s, a place my family frequents quite often, but the cooks liked to throw food… a lot. It seemed like every few minutes the chef would say ‘Watch out!” or “Open mouth!” and toss a piece of flaming hot shrimp at someone sitting at the table. I made the mistake of looking around the restaurant when I hear “Look!” and suddenly a small shrimp tale smacks me in the forehead. It was a deliciously good time!
