The Boy is Back in Town

Today was "Move back in" day at Seton Hill, and so I joined the hundreds of kids returning to campus for another year of higher learning (although I suspect that some will learn higher than others). I woke up this morning at 7am to go to church before finishing packing. I was still reeling from an amazing radio show the night before (I'll blog about that later...) and I had a sort of rough night's sleep. My aim was to have everything packed and shove off around 10am, but I grossly underestimated how much I actually had to pack, so me and the family didn't actually leave until close to 11.

Each year, as you go through college, you bring less and less with you. My freshman year I must have been crazy. I insisted on bringing something like three boxes filled with books that I thought I would read or refer to. I had raided my collection of literature at home and grabbed anything that looked useful and collegiate. Of course, those books sat in my closet the entire year. As each year goes on, you amass more things, so you shouldn't really bring alot to start out with. Take my roommate, Puff, for example. He didn't bring a computer monitor (despite having a computer). Some may think this was a poor decision, but I think he was smart. He's saving space!

Everything on campus seems to be pretty normal, aside from the large amounts of new people. Second glance, however, shows the changes that have occurred over the summer. The bookstore is in shambles, the Griffin's Cove is being redone, everything has a fresh new coat of paint on it... and SHU has gotten even dumber when it comes to rules, regulations, and administrative decisions. These are things I'm sure I'll go on about at length throughout the year...

My dorm room is, I would venture to say, an improvement over last year's. It seems bigger, even though we downgraded from a six to a quad. I also managed to get myself a single within our suite (mainly because I was the one who got first pick in the room lottery, so I decided to have free choice of rooms). This means that I'll be able to go to bed whenever I want (well, providing my neighbors learn to keep it down) and also learn to be a little bit more independent. I'll be prepared, when I graduate, to move in that 5x10 apartment that I've always dreamed of!

I ended up missing dinner tonight, since my parents took me to Jioio's (the best pizza ever) for dunch (dinner+lunch). It took me a while to get my room the way I want it, but I'm fairly satisfied right now. I just wish I could get rid of this Elephant-Man-sized-wardrobe that is in my room. Seriously, it's completely unnecessary. I didn't even bring any hangers to hang things in there... so right now it's just sort of taking up space. Space that could be filled with another chair, or a small bookshelf, or even a midget-slave.

It's also occurred to me that I have a super-sweet schedule this semester. I managed to get my freshman-year-Friday back, which means no classes for me and a three day weekend every week! I also only have one class Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday will be "Holy Shit Day", where I won't even have time for lunch! All the while I'll be interning at the Tribune-Review, working in the writing center, and possibly tutoring graphic design. So everything will balance out.

With all that said... let's get my junior year going already!

I know what you mean by bringing less and less every year. Freshman year, though, I hardly brought anything anyway. I think senior year I brought my laptop, a pen, and a pillowcase.

As an alumni, I can't wait to hear of all the stupid things SHU is doing now!
