Damn Liberals R Us

January 12, 2005

You'd think I'd suggested that our society shed our inhibitions and walk around buck naked from the shocked gasp issued from my co-worker's lips. Surely whatever I had said had been so grotesquely shocking that it was a sheer abomination that I had even spoken the words.

Did I suggest that we start eating babies instead of chicken? Did I propose an assination plot against the president's puppy? (Does Bush have a puppy? I don't even know.) Did I suggest that instead of helping third world countries we go bomb the hell out of them? No.

All I did was idly complain about the fact that our nation seems to think that shoving a dirty wad of cash at a problem will make it go away. And so I suggested that perhaps the army could fly to Asia and help out. Man. I could tell that if we hadn't been co-workers, I may have been in danger of losing a limb, or at the very least, an eardrum.

Thankfully, we were working, sitting at opposite sides of the room so I just turned a deaf ears to her complaints about the "damn liberals" and stared straight ahead at my computer trying not to mumble any rude phrases about armies causing trouble in the world.

Geez.

Actually, Moira, our military was in Asia helping out with the tsunami effort. The armed forces of the United States were there helping rebuild roads and excavating fallen buildings. But, the government of Indonesia (the main place we were helping out) told us to get our military forces out of there. We offered the help of both money and man power...

They took the money and kicked our asses out.

Hmmm... interesting counter statement, although I have not heard it on any news station. And believe me if Bush gave even half a damn about other countries THAT would be newsworthy!

Moira, at first I was a bit confused by your blog... but perhaps it's this cold-medicine-induced insomnia that's fuddling my brain.

Since throughout my youth, conservatives have accused liberals of throwing taxpayers' dollars at problems. To be "fiscally conservative" is to support the idea that a smaller, leaner government is better.

Mike and Evan...

I happened upon this link

http://www.navy.mil/local/tsunami/

Plenty of details about how the US navy is helping out. The ships can produce fresh water, they have on-board hospitals...

While the info that the US navy provides about itself is going to be selective, here is an article from a Canadian newspaper, that says some folks in India who are worried that the US military is scaling back its relief efforts too quickly: “My gut feeling is that no, the civilian side isn't ready to take over,” said Aine Fay, Indonesia director for the Irish aid group Concern. “The American military, the military hardware has been so useful.

“I'm a bit taken aback that they're thinking of withdrawing it already."
