One liter of Neurospora minimal media contains the following chemicals:
20 mL Vogel's Stock Solution
15 g sucrose
1 mL biotin solution
1 mL trace elements solution
1 L distilled water
20 g agar (for solid media)
The Vogel's, trace element, and biotin solutions have the following compositions.
Vogel's (in distilled water) contains:
Sodium citrate
Potassium phosphate monobasic
Ammonium nitrate
Magnesium sulfate
Calcuim chloride
(plus chloroform as a preservative)
Trace elements (in distilled water) contains:
Citric acid
Zinc sulfate
Ferric ammonium sulfate
Cupric sulfate
Magnesium sulfate
Boric acid
Sodium molybdate
Cobaltous chloride
(plus chloroform as a preservative)
Biotin solution
Biotin, 100 mg
Ethanol, 100 mL
Distilled water, 100 mL
Of all the chemicals in these three solutions, only one of them is optically active--biotin, an essential nutrient. C10H16N2O3S
A few images will be posted at a later date, including the chemical structure of this molecule and the chemical equation of sucrose hydrolysis.
