Tribune Review Nov 29 edition

Tribune-Review (Nov 29 edition) -- News Writing (EL 227)

I found the article about the nativity scene in new kensington being destroyed to be interesting. i think it was in holiday spirit for the reporter to have an address of somewhere to send contributions. I found that inthis class i like crime reporting the best of all the things we have learned to do. There was a bit of crime reporting in this article and I was able to identify all parts of the crime.

We the Media Chap11 12 and epilogue

We the Media (Ch 11 & 12, Epilogue) -- News Writing (EL 227)

Chapter 11
Journalism is the freedom of writing, but I found in this chapter that some of our freedoms within writing are being taken away. With the internet blogging and use of the internet privacy being taken away and the use of "cookies" people are seeing where you are and where you've been. Also with the uprise of technology the copyright laws to music and movies are now in debate. I found chapter 11 to be eyeopening to the freedoms of writing and how they may be conflicting with true journalism.

Chapter 12 & epilogue
In the book the author says "The internet is the most important medium since the printing press." In a way I feel that is now true for today's society. With reading this book I have come to realize that journalism is at a new level. Bloggin has become a new form of journalism which print is not.

Kindertransport discussion

Samuels, Kindertransport -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

I felt that the production of Kindertransport was done weel. I was impressed with the fact that the actresses were able to learn how to do accents and even speak in German. I felt that the actress who played Lil was the best of them all because she switched back and forth between being old and young. The scenery was doen well, but i do wish there had been some scenery changed like there had been in Fuddy Meers.

chap. 6 & 7 We the Media

We the Media (Ch 6 & 7) -- News Writing (EL 227)

Chapters 6 & 7 talk about how the audience of journalism is now becoming apart of the journalistic community. I like how the author split the chapters into journalists joining the program and then the public joining in. the chapter also talked about how certain newspapers and periodicals used bulletin boards and blogs and were surprised at the response given by the audience. my favorite quote from the chapters is one about how print journalists should not be scared. " we shouldnt see this as a threat. It is rather, the best oppurtunity in decades to do even better journalism."

Professor Bernhardi (finish)

Schnitzler, Professor Bernhardi (Finish) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Loewen: A convert! His wie wears a cross that size. His son is being educated at Kalksburg, the Jesuit college. Those are the right sort of people.

Cyprian: You really get on one's nerves with your fixed idea

I found these lines to be a foreshadowing maybe. That Loewen may do something to Dr. Golenthal. He has such hate for him after the operation, I could see him doing something.

Professor Bernardhi

Schnitzler, Professor Bernardhi Acts 1-3 -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Professor Bernhardi : If you began to think of all the illnesses that lie in wait for people who, so to speak, dont live long enough to die of them, you might lose your faith in Providence.

This is quite a confusing play for me, I cannot pick out a plot from it. I just get a bunch of doctors waxing intellectual. I did find this line to be very clever. It seems to me that Dr. Bernhardi is saying not to take certain parts of his medical profession too seriously. That is kind of disturbing to her coming from a doctor. It is a kind of relief to thier job.

chp 3-5 We The Media

We the Media (Ch 3-5) -- News Writing (EL 227)

on page 61 journalism is referred to as a profession that is one of the least transparent. I feel that if this business becomes transparent like some jobs, where will the media be? they say that blogging is becoming something that teaches journalism as much as has people become a part of it. i feel that the more people become involved the less transparent journalism will become.

We the Media Chap1 and intro

We the Media (Intro, Ch 1 & Ch 2) -- News Writing (EL 227)

From Gilmor I noticed he had two points. How far journalism has come since the first days of print press to the new age of technology. I liked his quote, " This evolution from journalism as a lecture to journalism as a conversation or seminar will force various communities to adapt." HE does have a point in that times are changing and the media will change with them. I do think that the internet will not completely take over print press. Newspapers and Magazines are respected institutions in this society.
In the first chapter Gilmor took us on a into history of where journalism has come from. The history of journalism has advanced so much just in the past 6 years. With the actions of sept 11th we were blogging. In recent year live journals have popped up that show the news and lives of people everywhere. I can see that this book will be tracing just what new ideas and tools are taking over journalism today

fences

Wilson, Fences -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Troy: I told that boy about that football stuff. The white man aint gonna let him get no where with that football.I told him when he first come to me with it. Now you come telling me he done went and got more tied up in it. He ought to go and get recruited in how to fix cars or something where he can make a living.

I felt that this line really shows how being black in the past really did make a difference in your future. Troy has no hope that his son will really reach a good job.

Tribune Review Nov 8

Tribune-Review (Nov 08 edition) -- News Writing (EL 227)

The article I was reading was the article on the Westmoreland jail population decreasing. the number of inmates is down to 576 thismonth from 622 a year. there was an apparent mix up that left a man behind bars for more than three weeks after he was supposed to be released.
One method they use now is emailing a list of inmate who had court orders imposed. That way prison guards can double check lists.

I'm glad to see that someone else is liking the crime reporting exercises too. I enjoy this because it is a faster paced kind of writing that is realistic.

A Man for All Seasons - Act 1

Bolt, A Man for All Seasons -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

More :This country’s planted thick with laws from coast to coast—man’s laws, not God’s—and if you cut them down—and you’re just the man to do it—d’you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then?

I think this line shows how More is getting fed up with the bribes and stupid drama that is surrounding whether or not he will get a certain position. His friends have already gotten positions by playing by other people's rules.

chap 9 -10 guide to newswriting

AP Guide to News Writing (Ch 9 & 10) -- News Writing (EL 227)

Chapter 9 talks about how small details really make a story. reporters cant rely on words and phrases that the public cannot understand. That is why small specific details are important. they bring more vitality to a story than a bland statement.
They warn not to use grand generalizations or noun adjective combos either. There is also a warning agaisnt excessiveness or details too.

Chapter 10 talks about the use of cliches. the occasional cliche is not frowned upon but using them several times in the same paragragraph.the use of metaphors is something to watch too.

It Aint Necessarily So chapters 10 and conclusion

It Ain't Necessarily So (Ch 10 & Conclusion) -- News Writing (EL 227)

Chapter 10 talked about hedgehog reporting. It is emphasizing on one big thing instead of looking at the other details surrounding it. they are kind of intellectual blind spots. Some of the things overlooked are g may cause characterics and demographic shifts. Just focusing on one part of something may cause people to miss other things that are important.

The conclusion shows us how the authors hope to have moved the readers to confront the media with news questions and standards. They try to get across how science and journalism will always collide. it is hard to report of science and always be accurate. It always will be.

The Glass Menagerie (finish)

Williams, The Glass Menagerie (Finish) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Tom : The window is filled with pieces of colored glass, tiny transparent bottle in delicate colors, like bits of a shattered rainbow.

To me the shattered the shattered rainbow is the situation of Jim being engaged. I felt so bad that Laura seemed tohave some hope for a moment, then it was just gone. You can tell Tom even feels bad about the situation and his own decision to leave his family so quickly.

It Aint Necessarily So chapters 8 - 9

It Ain't Necessarily So (Ch 8 & 9) -- News Writing (EL 227)

Chapter 8 talks about the differences of in statistical information from different sources. I liked how it mentioned that a statistic doesn't ave to go up or down but the way you get the information on it can become more or less accurate. It showed how two states reported on a story but one started early then the other, hence their statistics in the story were different. An increase in reports may just show achange in wats been said.

Chapter 9 tallked about whether a researchers motives are influenced by their research. Also how can readers be sure they can take certain studies seriously. They offer peer- review journals as reliable sources, but why? Isn't human error a possibility in a peer reviewed things? They also habe biases that condemn wrong research.

Glass Menagerie scenes 1- 5

Williams, The Glass Menagerie (Scenes 1-5) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Amanda: You are the only young man that I know of who ignores the fact that the future becomes the present, the present the past, and th past turns into everlasting regret if you dont plan for it!

I feel that this line shows how much Amanda wants to live through her children. You can tell that these words at one time applied to her by the way she tells them. Also all the comments she makes about her husband point to her not being in love with him when they were married
