Read a Banned Book!
September 24, 2005 to October 1, 2005 is Banned Book Week. Please consider these thoughts:
"Don't join the book burners. Don't think you are going to conceal thoughts by concealing evidence that they ever existed." Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America
"In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost." Alfred Whitney Griswold, author
"Censorship...has always been and always will be the last resort of the boob and the bigot." Eugene O'Neill, playwright
"Free societies ... are societies in motion, and with motion comes tension, dissent, friction. Free people strike sparks, and those sparks are the best evidence of freedom's existence." Salman Rushdie, author
"Censorship reflects a society's lack of confidence in itself. It is the hallmark of an authoritarian regime..." Potter Stewart, U.S. Supreme Court justice
BANNED BOOKS ARE ON DISPLAY AT THE LIBRARY. CELEBRATE YOUR INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM. READ A BANNED BOOK!

Our Doors Are Open
On rare occasions we have seniors come to the library and tell us they haven't been here since freshman orientation. Sometimes upperclassmen come to the library, instead of relying exclusively on electronic resources for a change, and are delightfully surprised to find out how much the library offers. While it's wonderful that these students eventually "find" the library, it's a shame that it takes so long. The library and the librarians are here for everyone! Our location is convenient; our hours are long; and our wish is to serve you. We want each student to be successful, and the library can help to make that happen. Take advantage of all the resources we have. Our doors are open.

Information Literacy
Anyone who has had library instruction here probably knows that one of the goals of Reeves Memorial Library is to achieve information literacy throughout the campus. Our campaign is an important one for all. Increasingly we are becoming a divided nation of people who know and people who don't know, people who have and people who don't have. Whether we like it or not, knowledge is strength. Individuals with information literacy are among those who know and those who have. Information literacy empowers people and promotes equality. It provides lifelong survivor skills that extend far beyond the world of academia. Are you information literate? Your future could depend on it.
