An Interesting Dictionary ;)

I didn't really know what to expect when I first heard about Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary. I do remember, however, that I thought it would be a short story or something of that nature like all the other works I read by him for my Lit class or elsewhere. What was really interesting was that it was nothing like a short story but it was actually just like it sounded: a dictionary...

Bierce goes through the entire A-Z alphabet and has different definitions for each letter. Furthermore, each letter contains quite a few "mock" and "sarcastic" definitions for real life words.

For example:
Friendless: Having no favors to bestow. Destitute of fortune. Addicted to utterance of truth and common sense.

That alone I found to be interesting and at some points, truthful. After all, don't all the fairweather friends of sorts that we've had in our lives hate to hear the truth about something?

One particularly interesting definition was the negative slant taken on the word love.

Love: A temporary insanity curable by marriage or by removal of the patient from the influences under which he incurred the disorder. This disease, like caries and many other ailments, is prevalent only among civilized races living under artificial conditions; barbarous nations breathing pure air and eating simple food enjoy immunity from its ravages. It is sometimes fatal, but more frequently to the physician than to the patient.

It appears that Bierce has had some rather negative and harsh experiences and situation in his life that leads him to write such a work of art. Throughout my Lit class discussion, it was evident that others felt that Bierce had to have experienced some sorts of negativity to resort to these types of sarcastic, biased, and slanted definitions.

Ahh...The Sweet Smell of WEDDINGS!!! =D

I got to have the pleasure of being the maid of honor in one of my best buds wedding this past Friday. I've known Amanda and Todd for 3 years now and I love them both dearly. If anyone as been an avid reader of my blog since the very beginning, I used to post info and dates for shows of the local band, In Sight of June, well that is Todd's band. (The are taking a break now, if anyone cares and wonder why there is a lack of updates on them)

Anywho, I had to give a semi-sorta dinner speech before the best man's dinner toast. Amanda told me last minute that she wanted me to give one. I wanted it to be one of the best things I've ever written seeing that she means the world to me and she's a GREAT friend, so I tried my best to write something both meaningful and funny. I was disappointed in my outcome but was surprised that I didn't muff it up at the wedding reception. Amanda seldom, if ever, cries and I made her teary eyed so I must have done something right.

The wedding was beautiful! Admist all this, I had to try and work on a project for my Media Production class. It was supposed to be like 20 some sequence shots of the wedding. That was a miserable failure! Due to the chaos of the wedding, some problems with the ownership of the digital camera, running around with chickens with our heads cut off, and the list goes on...I got some pics but not like the best ones. Hopefully they work well enough for my project. I should have known that that one wouldn't fly over well...wedding days are hugely busy and I rarely had the time to get myself ready let alone be a amateur photographer. =(

I can't wait till Amanda gets back from her mini-hm. Her *new* husband Todd wouldnt tell her where she was going nor would he tell me so I was anxious to find out where they went and all the juicy details. ;) Well that was really all...it was a B-U-S-Y weekend with the rehearsal dinner, then the wedding, then working, and working again. This week isn't going to be fun either. Tis my favorite time of the year *hint the sarcasm*

Boo to this...

Lit Paper Revision - Pft, Whatever!

Perhaps I can find solace as I sit here and STRUGGLE to revise my Lit paper that is due tomorrow. Perhaps if I just vent a bit I will get through this and find the compacity to stomach the acid building in my gut...perhaps I shall get in trouble...perhaps....but at this point of the year, I'm burnt out already.

I'm sorry. I would have to disagree with the grade I was given on my argumentative paper. I got a C-. Come on now! I did the comparison of the print version of Ambrose Bierce's An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge to the 1962 film version by Robert Enrico. Sorry all you Literature majors, Enrico does it better than Mr. Bierce and he's the man who wrote it. This just pisses me off. I feel that as a student, I did a damn good case in defending why I thought it was better and provided examples that would make me feel that way. I'm sorry to also say that I'm finding it extremely hard to make revisions on this thing. I liked it the way it was and because someone doesn't agree with me I have to get a C- again due to lack of revisions? What am I suppose to do with this thing???
