1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"
"The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"
I received the trilogy in a special edition that contained all three novels into one binding. Obviously, I have nothing but praise for this masterpiece, but on a more objective side; it really took a lot of time and patience for me to finish these books. There is a mythological style to Tolkien's work, which is very different from traditional pieces.
2. "The Hobbit"
This is the prequel to the "Lord of the Rings" which I actually read after the trilogy. I must admit that I was a little disappointed because the writing style differs somewhat. The narrative is written in second person, which is not a well accepted style for many readers (including me). I also did not find the plot as exciting as the trilogy, and the characters were not as memorable. However, I do suggest this quick read because the background information sheds light on the context of the trilogy.
3. "The Silmarillion"
I actually am taking a break from reading this book because it is very complicated compared to the previous books mentioned. This is basically the prequel to all of Tolkien's tales of Middle-Earth. The gods and goddesses of Tolkien's world are made known, as well as the roles of the races (men, elves, dwarfs, etc.).
