The Melville story was very interesting and at certain parts it was funny. I found that the elderly man warm heart throughout the reading and he became sensitive to Bartleby situation. Well, he actually was sensitive until he couldn't take it anymore.
Posted by Se-AnnWilliams at September 8, 2004 03:55 PMIt is nice to see or read about someone showing compassion for someone. Melville was really very patient with Barnleby, and that is nice to see especially since today's media shows so much violence and incompassion.
Posted by: Jessica Zelenak at September 8, 2004 04:02 PMSe-Ann, you noted that the narrator's compassion has its limits. How does he treat his other employees? What is it about Bartleby that makes him worthy of special treatment?
Posted by: Dennis G. Jerz at September 8, 2004 05:32 PMBartleby probably worthy of the special treatment because how he was out of touch with society and as a person we sometimes feel those are the individuals that are in need of our services until they abuse it. He was also a charity case, so that is probably why the employer became so interested in him.
