Cecilian Hall was filled with screams of excitement on Thursday, October 7, 2004, when the Seton Hill University (SHU) baseball team held its first Buy-A-Guy auction.

The regulations were simple: only females could bid, the minimum bid was five dollars, and the bids, at a minimum, would increase in increments of one dollar. The guys had a chance to strut their stuff on stage in three different sections.

The first section of this auction was swimwear, with the men tearing away pants, ripping off shirts, and dancing. Sophomore Chad Fitzgerald said, “It was a little nerve-racking at first.”

Then, on to the second section where the guys modeled their baseball uniforms, followed by formal wear.

Then the bidding began, as each guy took the stage one by one. The guys sold anywhere from $10 to $400. So who was it that sold for $400? Rick Austin was bought by Carole Parker, business professor, and Ashley Winch, junior.

So did all this money end up going to a good cause? Josh Pratt, sophomore, said, “We were doing fundraising for our trip to Florida, plus we have expenses like cleats and jackets.”

Anthony Panza, freshman, gave a big thank you. “We would like to thank everyone who bid and all of our sponsors.”

Not only was the baseball team a part of this, but Emily Evans, sophomore, resident assistant (RA) of Canevin-Lowe, helped to organize it as a floor program. Evans explained that it was a campus-wide floor program, including Melissa Whiteman, Brownlee RA, Jimmy Nash and Steve Gumpf, both Havey RAs. They created flyers and hung them all around campus, spreading the word of this event. They also found some great sponsors who donated gift certificates as prizes for the high bidders and their dates.
