Although Greensburg may seem like a dead town for things to do, the best finds are usually right in front of our eyes. If running out to Westmoreland Mall or wandering around Wal-Mart seems a bit ordinary, try looking for something that may add a bit of flair to your shopping repertoire.

Located on South Pennsylvania Avenue, Penelope’s is a small business in Greensburg that sells an “eclectic mix of unique cards and gifts.” For 18 years, Mimi Trakofler has taken care of this little, but welcoming shop. She says the name had already been there before she owned it.

The store’s collectibles include everything from aromatherapy candles, cosmopolitan glass sets, French art deco, gourmet teas and handmade scarves to antique tea sets, calendars with film posters of the 1950s and tarot cards.

“We get most of our products from local artists,” Trakofler said. “In fact, we’d love to accept work from Seton Hill’s art students, or anyone who’d like to submit anything for that matter,” she continued.

One thing that is noticeable about Penelope’s is the small percentage of young adults and college students who go into town to explore the different businesses. According to Trakofler, even though the store’s busiest hours are on lunch breaks, there is a reason as to why there is a lack in customers.

“I think that the people who like to shop in town are minorities. People are used to going to malls and what they know,” she said.

Still, with the store’s hours being from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday through Saturday, it is understandable that it is hard for students to drop by. However, on Thursdays, the store is open until 8 p.m.

Even if it is the difference of location, and unawareness about a new shopping place, Trakofler assures that there’s nothing to worry about. “I really want the customers to feel very comfortable when they walk in. I want the store to be a place where you can have an enjoyable time,” she said.

So perhaps next time customers and newcomers alike want a little change in their shopping trip, they’ll have to take a chance on something that may end up being their new little piece of home, as Penelope’s is to Greensburg.
