Throughout the month of April, Seton Hill University’s (SHU) choirs have been performing throughout Greensburg, including spring concerts and with other universities.
“I’ve been extremely pleased with the performances of the choirs this semester. We’ve sung in a variety of musical styles and we have some wonderful voices in the groups,” said Marvin Huls, associate professor of music.
“I’m especially pleased when people comment on the beautiful tone they hear from our choirs. [It is] a reflection on the excellent work of our voice faculty.”

The University Choir, Women’s Chorale, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and a newly-formed Chamber Choir, have each performed in a variety of different concerts during the spring semester, including a performance combining the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg’s choir with SHU’s own.
Junior Monica Bello, a member of the University Choir, said she is very excited about the number of members within SHU’s music program.
“The whole program is expanding a lot this year,” she said. “We’re having a lot more people coming in who aren’t music majors.”
“Most of the singers are music majors, but not necessarily voice majors since all music education students need to be in a vocal ensemble. We do, however, have around ten non-majors who sing. I’d like to encourage more non-majors to join one of the choirs, especially tenors and basses,” Huls said.
The Women’s Chorale, which has been performing with the other choirs, also performed as part of the
Westmoreland Choral Society's Palm Sunday concert in the John Rutter Mass of the Children.
Freshman Jessica Harmon feels the semester has been very successful. “I really enjoyed singing this semester and I can’t wait for next year,” she said.
Next semester the choir plans to perform in their usual Sing and Ring, Cathedrals and Spires, and in their Christmas concert. However, Huls hopes to be able to try different areas to perform in.
“I’d like to work next year toward getting our ensembles off-campus for more performances, perhaps even explore a short tour to begin with. We made a few steps this year with our performances; perhaps even explore a short tour to begin with. We made a few steps this year with our performances at the cathedral and at the
University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg,” Huls said.
