The Seton Hill University (SHU) women’s lacrosse team ended their first season with a record of 4-4.
The coaches and players believe that this was a good sign for the team for future years to come.
“For a first year program, they were phenomenal,” said Heather Brown, assistant lacrosse coach. Brown said that she has heard good comments all throughout the season from other coaches and officials, and she is confident the team can only get better.
A concern the team had at the beginning of the season was that there would not be enough players to had a successful season, but that concern has seemed to diminish.
“While the size was a challenge, I think they met it and overcame it very swiftly. They worked so hard and they sprinted so fast throughout the entire game,” said Brown.
“I think that we came together and completed all the goals that we set for ourselves,” said Rayshell Clipper, freshman. “We should all get better from this year to next year.”
Women’s Softball
The softball team’s record may have a lot of losses this season, but according to Head Coach Jess Black, the team has come a long way from where they had begun.
“I think that we learned,” Black said, “and I think that we lost our edge. Last year teams did not prepare for us; this year they did.”
While many of the other teams SHU faced this season brought back upperclassmen starters, the Lady Griffins had mainly sophomore and freshman starters. “We are still young,” said Black. “When you go from playing a 20-game high school schedule to a 60-game college schedule, it’s very mentally demanding. Just growing there [mentally] will help us.”
Freshman Christina Vanderpool, in agreement with Black said, “Even though it doesn’t look like we were successful this season record-wise, honestly, I think we had a good season. We grew as a team. Our coaches did a real good job of getting our team working together and talking.”
Men’s Baseball
As of April 25, 2005, the baseball team had a record of 22-16. This season was very challenging, according to Head Coach Marc Marizzaldi, mainly because of all the injuries that occurred.
“I think we have done very well, especially considering all the injuries that we’ve had,” said Marizzaldi. He said he was with all the players who managed to come through for the team while they were in a bind.
“A lot of our younger players and guys who did not get a chance [to play] early on really seized their opportunities and stepped up to help us win games,” Marizzaldi said. “I think if we continue to grow and improve at the rate we did this season, we’ll be better.”
“We’re starting to peak right now. We’re starting to play our best baseball,” said Darrell Kuntz, freshman, “We beat Walsh twice, and that’s a big accomplishment considering they’re the best team in the conference. I think we’re playing very well. We’re achieving our goals.”
