I think that being an English major has been an asset to all of my other classes. It definatly helps with writing papers. The topics aren't always too fun but I can always think about writing it creativly.
Just last year, at the end of the semester I changed my major. I thought I wanted to be a psychology major, but I found that I really didn't enjoy it that much. I had to struggle to keep my grades up, and I found it wasn't something that I really wanted to do. I love english and I love writing. When I was a little girl I used to write stories all the time, and everyonce in a while I still do today. I also love to read, since I have things to do during the day I always read for fun every night before I go to sleep, I think its a great way to end the day.
Someday I am going to be an english teacher, it's something I can see myself doing in the future. I have observed several classes and I really liked it. I have my worries though, what if I'm a bad teacher? What if the kids don't like me? What if I'm boring? I guess I should worry more about that in a couple years from now.
Posted by SueMyers at April 26, 2004 8:36 AMDon't worry about a thing Sue! If you want to be an English teacher, and you have the desire (which you obviously do), then do it! Go for it! I personally don't think that you are going to be a bad teacher. A little bit of constructive criticism...SPEAK UP!!! If you do that, teaching will never be a problem for you. You know the material of every book we read, and you are a talented writer. So keep going, and let nothing stop you!
Posted by: Jay at April 27, 2004 10:08 PMHey Sue!
I was searching for websites where I could read the experiences of other English students and came across yours. I know exactly how you feel. I am enrolled as a Biology and Chemistry major at my college but after the first semester, I have only been taking courses in English, Literature and Linguistics- and loving it. I wanted to make sure I really liked that major and discovered that I am passionate about it. I however do not know what I want to do with an English degree after college. I work full time in the financial arena (and not particularly liking it) although there are many websites that inform that English is a good basis for working in such an industry. Scary. I think an English degree provides a good basis for just about any occupation (certainly more options available than with other majors) and its comforting to know that there are diverse areas where you can apply those skills that an education in English teaches you. I have dabbled with the idea of teaching as well. I say if you are passionate about English and you think teaching is an area where you can apply that,as well as glean satisfaction, then go for it!
Posted by: Barry at July 30, 2004 10:10 AMIf teaching isn't your thing, then I'd suggest internships in areas that interest you, so you can find jobs that call for good writing or research skills doing things that you're already good at doing.
