Tom and Daisy - selfish individuals

As I said in my last entry, I don't like Tom or Daisy. Daisy is a selfish idiot and Tom is a brute and a hypocrite.

When Tom told Daisy and Gatsby that they couldn't continue to have their little fling, I wanted to scream. How dare he, when he was doing the same exact thing. One thing that bugged me was that he obviously didn't love Daisy but he just couldn't seem to stand the fact that she had her designs on someone else, even though it was all for the wrong reasons.

As much as I didn't like Gatsby, I will give him props for trying to stop the car to find out what they hit. As for Daisy, I thought this part really showed her selfishness. She took a life and she didn't care because all she could think about was the fact that she was so involved her her own little selfish problems (the fact that Tom didn't let her have an affair with Gatsby). Also, she didn't even take the blame for Myrtle's death. I'm not sure if George would have killed her, maybe not because she is a woman, and she might have been able to explain that it was an accident. Then again, he might have killed her, so in a way it was good that Tom may have been trying to protect her. Again, I didn't like Gatsby, but he didn't deserve to die because of the stupidity of Daisy.

I honestly believe that Daisy told Tom everything that happend that night. To cover their tracks, they skipped out of town, and didn't make any appearences until two years later. Also, if Daisy really loved Gatsby so much, why didn't she send a note, send flowers, or even show up at the funeral? I was so glad that Nick yelled at Tom when he saw him on the street. There was a part in the book that I really liked, where Nick described Tom and Daisy and their selfishness:

"they were careless people - Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they made....." ( page 179)

I find it funny that no sooner does Nick get done saying this, he sees Tom go into a jewerly store to by pearls. I have to wonder, did these people even think about all the destruction they caused? I'm sure if the book would have been continued, I'm sure that Tom would be back to having an affair with another woman, and Daisy would still be sitting around her house like a moron, not even caring that Gatsby has been killed, and finding some other poor soul to destroy.

I completely agree with you when you say that if Daisy really liked Gatsby then she should have gone to the funeral or at least send flowers. I really wonder why she did not do so. It just does not make sense for someone to know a person for so long and not even go to their funeral when they die.

I don't think that Daisy knew -how- to love: everything in her life had been handed to her on a silver platter... anything that didn't fit her accustomed lifestyle got thrown out in the trash. I'm going to guess from Fitzgerald's portrayal of the upper crust o' society that he doesn't care too much for the hoity tooity rich folks. Just a guess! ;c)

I didn't like Tom and Daisy either. They only care themselves. I think Daisy loved Gatsby a lot. She cared about money more. That's why she didn't show up Gatsby's funeral.
