The Thrill of Victory
The YouTube video on violence and video games provided by Cody Naylor suggests that gamers that play violent video games are in it for the thrills and not the kills. I can agree with that because I enjoy shooting up the bad guys and even the good decapitation of a zombie. However, I still have a hard time believing that repeating viewing of violence through games, television, or movies by impressionable youth does not make them more prone to violent tendencies. I can only hope that the youth have strong and sensible parents to steer them along the right path.
Susan, I'm glad to hear you enjoy a good violent game now and again as well! I do also agree with you about young, impressionable children playing such games... that is why the ESRB was created to put age-oriented ratings on games so that parents can know what kind of material is in the games their children are playing. For example, titles with an "M" rating are intended only for mature audiences and children under the age of 17 are not allowed to purchase them... stores actually card people (I have personal experience being carded)... while it is not 100% solid, it is something that the games industry should recieve accolades for...
Thanks Cody. I do believe that the ESRB rating system is a good thing as long as parents show interest in what their kids are playing, understand the system, and play or watch the games with their children. Some parents just buy the games without ever checking up on the game content. Interestingly, I just saw on the news that the National Institute on Media and the Family closed because of the economy (http://gamersyndrome.com/2009/video-games/mediafamilycloses/).
