This story really made me think. I use a lot a sarchasim when I am frustrated or tired of how things are going. I didn't really see how it looked until I saw ths character in the story who was able to tick off every body she met with her sarchasim. I really liked this one. It makes you look at how we respond to people and how we put our own feelings out there and build a wall without knowing we are doing it. The man in the naked lady suit who triedd so hard to talk to Zoe yet she wouldn't hear of it like if she let her guard down the world might get in. Zoe really needed to do some soul searching to figure out why peple didn't like her instead of blaming everyone for her problems.

I agree, I think everybody is ugly at times... And while this phrase doesn't exactly apply to Zoe's aesthics, after all she is described as almost pretty, I think you're right on when it comes to the soul. It's like Zoe's soul is black and ugly with fear... like those pictures of smokers lungs caked with sticky tar. She's so afraid that she doesn't let Earl in even though she regrets that she's getting older and still isn't married.

That is a great point! That's something that we do pretty much subsconsciously, not really realizing that our doing that -is- affecting and creating the world around us. I guess that trick is to become aware of your own devices and work to conquer them. You've got me thinking... sweet! ;c)
Posted by: moira at March 31, 2005 12:41 PMI'm right behind Moira on this one--thinking about being the master of our own "devices" is great. But being a master of all doesn't leave room for anyone else in life. Maybe Zoe just felt that she had the world figured out--that there wasn't anything she hadn't suffered or endured that anyone could possibly relate to her tragedies. She had a wall up, alright, and she didn't even seem willing to let her own sister inside. When Evan did try to dig her way into Zoe's life, mentioning marriage truly threw Zoe's defenses up 10 notches higher--"Oh, I forgot to get married," she responds... Her sarcasm, although humorous at times, is her shield to life's intermittent sword.
Posted by: Karissa at March 31, 2005 02:58 PMlike mina said, she really wanted someone i think, but the right guy needs to break her defenses down for her to open up. when she sees a guy make advances on her the same way the previous thousnad guys did, i think she automatically blocks them out. So if one comes to her the right way, who knows?
