Colors in Poe's "The Raven"

After reading Poe's the Raven, a thing jumped out at me and it was the use of the color purple. He uses a reference to the color purple twice in this dark and dreary poem. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas why Poe might do this. Does he just simply like the color purple or does it symbolize something. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it! :)

Trisha,

Hmm..I haven't noticed the color purple in this poem. This is a good observation. A very good symbolism. I think the color purple might be indicating fear, twistness, dreary, or hallunations. I am thinking this because the purple color is always related to bad things. It's never a bright or pleasant color.

To Trisha,

After I read the Raven, I was not aware of him mentioning the color purple. But after reading your blog, I looked over the poem and Poe does make references to the color purple, and he also calls it violet. I am an art major and I've learned that colors can a variety of meanings. Sometimes the symbolism of the color (like purple)is very purposeful and is meant to make a point. I don't know what point Poe was trying to get across, but I am sure he mentioned purple for a reason. Here is a website I found that may help out out http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Purple

Trisha,
I was trying to make a link for you to wordiq.com. I was hoping it would show up so that you can just click on it, it didn't show up that way but I still hope you find it useful.

After reading the Raven, I think purple is used maybe as saying since the raven is black sometimes there is a reflection of dark blue or purple against the bird.

After reading and analyzing the poem "the Raven", I took out that the color purple means royalty and shows how the raven has high power.
