Chillingworth the adversary enters the story in Chapter 2 of The Scarlet Letter and is described as a wild looking man with one shoulder higher than the other, in other words somewhat deformed. His description as well as the name Chillingworth automatically give the reader the idea he is the "bad guy." It's hard to imagine that Hester was once his wife.
