"I shall not live in vain"

Emily Dickinson's poem "VI" speaks of finding meaning in life through helping others.  It seems to me that she is trying to convince herself that there is meaning in life, especially considering the somewhat hopeless tone of most of her writing.

I was thinking along those lines, I really don't know much about Dickinson but I do believe that she never really left her house. Thinking that her family published these poems after her death from letters, cards and writings that they found, makes the poems almost sound like a cry for companionship.
