Fall Issue of Eye Contact - OUT NOW!

I would just like to let everyone know that our brand new Fall issue of Eye Contact is now available! As editor, it has been a pleasure working with my wonderful staff and your excellent submissions to put together this newest issue.

We also must remind you that the submission deadline for our Spring 2007 issue is February 16th, 2007. So while you're home over Christmas break, sit down and write or paint, or photograph, or whatever form of art you do and send it to us! We are always looking forward to submissions.

If you would like an issue, they are located at various places on campus, including the Publications Office in the basement of Sullivan. If you would like enough issues to distribute to an entire class here on campus, please contact our advisor, Dr. Michael Arnzen. Or, if you aren't at Seton Hill, you can always request an issue via mail by sending $3.50, plus $1.00 for postage, to Eye Contact c/o Seton Hill University, Box 246, Greensburg PA 15601.

From the staff of Eye Contact: have a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

Judging Session Oct 25

Calling all judges! Eye Contact is holding a literature and art judging session this Wednesday! Now is your chance to contribute to the magazine, judge some great artwork, prose and poetry and help us decide what's making the cut.

Our judging process is blind... which doesn't mean you'll be blindfolded. Rather, all of our lit and art submissions will be nameless, so know one will know who wrote what. Everyone who judges will have their name listed as a judge in this Fall's issue! There will also be some snacks provided! It's going to be a fun evening!

The judging session is being held in Admin 204 this Wednesday, Oct 25 at 8:00pm. Come for the whole time or just come for a little bit-- any help is appreciated! (And please bring a pen.)

Submission Guidelines: Fall 2006

Eye Contact invites submissions from students, faculty, and staff of area colleges. A blind judging process is used to evaluate works. Submissions must be previously unpublished, and Eye Contact reserves all publication rights for the issue in question. Attach this information separately: title of work, your full name (no pseudonyms, please), current address, e-mail, telephone number, college, and a one-line biographical statement. Neither your name, nor any identifying entity should appear on your entry.

DEADLINE: October 20, 2006.

Mail submissions to Eye Contact, c/o Seton Hill University, Box 246, Greensburg, PA 15601. Literature submissions may be e-mailed as a rich text file (.rtf or as text files only -- all other file attachments will be deleted unread) to eyecontact@setonhill.edu

LITERATURE: Entries must be typed (double-spaced), with the title included in the upper left hand corner of each page. Individual poems are limited to two pages and prose should not exceed ten pages in length. Please include a SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope) if you want your manuscript to be returned. If you submit your work electronically via e-mail, be sure to include all the required identifying information listed above in the body of the e-mail message or in a separately attached file.

ART/PHOTOGRAPHY: Entries are restricted to black and white works. (Occasionally, we can reproduce a color item in black and white, or select it as cover art). All art must have your name, address, e-mail, telephone number, media/medium, and title written on the back of the piece. Enclose a 3x5 card with your name, your college and a one-line biographical statement. Artwork will be returned by mail only if accompanied by appropriate postage. Eye Contact does not accept responsibility for work damaged in the mail. We cannot accept artwork via e-mail, but can receive floppy diskettes, Zip disks, or data CDs. Digital submissions may be reprinted electronically in the magazine unless originals are provided.

All-Staff Meeting on Wednesday

Another school year is upon us, and with that comes two great new issues of Eye Contact! We will be holding an open meeting this Wednesday, September 13th in the Greensburg Room on campus. The meeting begins at 7:30pm, and there -may- be donuts there.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in helping out with the magazine. We're always looking for help--and since the majority of our editorial staff is graduating in the Spring, we could use some dedicated folks to take over for us. At the meeting, the current staff will talk about their roles in the magazine, as well the judging process that we go through to select entries.

Hope to see you there!

Spring 2006 Issue Now Available!

The Spring 2006 issue of Eye Contact is now available! Everyone on the staff is extremely proud of this issue, and we hope that all of our readers enjoy it. The magazine is currently being distributed on campus at Seton Hill University. If you would like to order an issue, please feel free to contact us!

Successful Judging

With what might be a record number of entries, the Eye Contact Spring 2006 Judging Session was a great success last night. There were 22 poems and 21 short stories, for a record total of 43 literature entries; and there were 38 pieces of art, of many media, that were judged.

Krispy Kremes greeted our judges, who worked with incredible efficiency. Thanks to all those that came to judge--we couldn't do it without you!

Stay tuned for the Spring 2006 issue. It's sure to be a good one!

Spring 2006 Judging Session!

The Judging Session for the Spring 2006 issue of Eye Contact will be held on Wednesday, March 1st in room 206 Admin. We'll begin at 8:45 pm, and judge, judge, judge until we've judged them all.

If you're not sure how "blind judging" works, or have never been to an Eye Contact judging before, read on... (Click the link, or click "Continue Reading" below for more about blind judging.)

Blind judging means that no one's name is on the work. The artists/authors' names are removed from the pieces submitted, and are numbered or lettered (this is so the editors can match up the works with the names if they are chosen for publication).

Each piece -- art, poetry, and prose -- is judged FIVE times by FIVE different judges. The judging sheets are also labeled for the number/letter of the piece, again this is important to match up the information for the piece.

When you show up to a judging session, you should bring the following:
1) a writing utensil of choice
2) an open mind
3) your very best critical analysis skills (we don't distribute those at the session :-)

Before the session begins, the editors will probably ask that you "sign in." This is so that we will know who our judges are, so we can express our thanks by including your name in the magazine. (This is something you can brag about, and put on your CCT.)

In the room that the judging takes place, the pieces will be lined up on tables next to their five judging sheets. It's important that if you are judging piece "G" that the judging sheet you are marking also says "G" on it -- this goes for all pieces.

Once you finish judging a piece, put the judging sheet in the stack the editors designate, and grab another piece to judge. This process continues until all the pieces in the room have been judged five times. We will know that the pieces have been judged five times when all their judging sheets are gone.

A few "good ideas" and "bad ideas" when judging...
Good Idea: make comments on pieces that are particularly outstanding -- tell the editors why you think the piece should be published.

Bad Idea: circling more than one number for a category on a judging sheet. (We only take whole numbers, so scribbling 4.5 is also along the same lines as circling both 4 and 5.)

Good Idea: making sure you re-read any parts of a prose or poetry piece that are unclear the first time. If it is still unclear after you re-read it, tell us so in the "comments" section on the form.

Bad Idea: judging your own or your friends' works. This entirely blows the idea of "blind judging." If you KNOW a piece is yours or that a friend of yours submitted it--DO NOT JUDGE IT. Just don't.
Even if you wouldn't rate it well. Look for something that's unfamiliar instead.

Good Idea: bring friends to judge with you. We don't care what major they're pursuing. Not everyone that judges for Eye Contact is an Art or English major.

Bad Idea: talking during the judging session. A lot of people are trying to focus and analyze works -- just have courtesy and be as quiet as you can.

If you have any questions about blind judging or anything else pertaining to Eye Contact, email us!

DEADLINE Friday!

The deadline for all Eye Contact submissions is this Friday, February the 17th. Please see the guidelines for further information.

Questions? Email or leave a comment.

We look forward to receiving your work!

New Look!

For the new semester, the Eye Contact blog has an all new look!

Additionally, there are some "new and improved" features in the realm of functionality. The comments work again. The sidebar stays put. The links all work--including the email! And all of the little internal pages like "Comment Preview," "Comment Pending," and "Comment Error" all match up just great.

There is a possibility of adding more about the staff and Eye Contact's history at Seton Hill, but I'll know more about that happening after the staff meets up to see the new blog for the first time!

Get ready for a terrific semester, and the latest from Eye Contact!
