EyeContact-Zombie3.jpg

The Fall term is nearly over but as this poster by Art Editor Marie Manski (located outside the SHU dining hall) reminds us, the magazine will rise again in Spring 2009! The "dead" line will be upon us before we know it....

So now would be a good time for you to work on your creative submissions (due Feb 6th)...and remember, we are especially looking for works that bridge or fuse the boundaries between art and language. Be creative -- anything from graphic fiction/comix or storyboards to creative uses of poetic space or typographic experiments are invited! Alternatively, stories could talk involve a classic painting, involve an artist's dilemma, or play with captions, etc. Collaborations between artists/writers are welcome. We do not see our theme as a limit, so if in doubt, send it in to eyecontact@setonhill.edu (please read the guidelines before submitting).

The Merit of Eye Contact

I'm happy to annouce that our "Revelation" issue (Spring 2008) has received the American Scholastic Press Association award for “First Place with Special Merit” among college magazines. Eye Contact scored among the top 10% of college magazines scored for format, content, and presentation. Our magazine had previously won this award for the Spring 2007 issue.

We would like to thank all of our writers, artists, and patrons for making this possible.

See the official Seton Hill University press release for more information.

Quick Fall 2008 Updates

CURIOUS READERS:
If you are a member of the SHU campus community and would like a copy of the Spring 2008 "Revelations" issue of Eye Contact, send a request to eyecontact@setonhill.edu with your name and campus box number.

INTERESTED WRITERS/ARTISTS:
The guidelines for the next issue of Eye Contact are currently in development, and will be posted on this site as soon as they are ready. The 2008-09 school year marks a special 20th anniversary for Eye Contact, and we are planning some unique and creative ways of celebrating this milestone. Typically, our Fall deadline falls in mid-October, so if you are working on a piece to submit, please keep that in mind. We are especially eager for alumnae and previous Eye Contact contributors from over the years to submit new work.

INTERESTED STUDENTS:
The primary staff positions for Eye Contact are currently full, but we are seeking new students who are interested in assisting the editors and learning the ropes for future positions. If you are interested, contact editor-in-chief Erin Mitchell and she will keep you posted about future meetings.

EVERYONE:
Beyond the college's funding for our core printing and business needs, Eye Contact is a student club and depends on the kindness of patrons to succeed; we do not accept advertising revenue because we see an ad-free magazine as a symbol of artistic integrity. Virtually all of our print run is distributed to readers for free. Thus, we appreciate any financial donations we receive from supporters of the local art community. We cherish and appreciate every patron's donation -- even if just a dollar. Your financial contributions go toward office supplies and support staff meetings and incidentals (like awards and party supplies), in addition to helping us afford special printing and production needs. Anyone who makes a (tax deductable) donation to the magazine gets listed as a patron in the magazine and is at the top of the list to receive a free copy on publication. We always appreciate your support. If you would like to financially contribute to Eye Contact, contact our Business Manager, Liz Rettger.

We'll be posting more news, excerpts from last term's Revelation issue, and more here on the blog in the weeks ahead. Come on back!

Above is a graphic with some details if you are interested.

Please consider attending this event to show your support for the campus arts and literary community; there will be an opportunity for all SHU writers to read and share their work with the audience at the open mic, as well.

Submission Guidelines: Spring 2008

SPRING THEME = "REVELATION"

DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 22nd 2008

Eye Contact Cover from Fall 2007 issue

Eye Contact invites submissions from students, faculty, and staff of area colleges. A blind judging process is used to evaluate works. Submissions must be previously unpublished, and Eye Contact reserves all publication rights for the issue in question. Any work accepted for the magazine may be reprinted online at http://blogs.setonhill.edu/EyeContact or in other promotional material for the magazine.

Attach this information separately: title of work, your full name (no pseudonyms, please), current address, e-mail, telephone number, college, and a one-line biographical statement. Neither your name, nor any identifying entity should appear on your entry.

DEADLINE: February 22nd, 2008.

Theme: REVELATION. The theme can be related to an eye-opening experience, a truth-spilling session (reminiscent of Moment of Truth), or a dream induced exposé. It does not have to be confined to religious references. Apocalyptic adventures or the revealing of secrets are just a few examples of what can be done with this topic. Use your imagination. We want you to be open with your creativity in tackling this theme. But please hurry with your submissions; the countdown to the end has begun.

Mail submissions to Eye Contact, c/o Seton Hill University, Box 246, Greensburg, PA 15601. Literature submissions may be e-mailed as a rich text file (.rtf or as text files only -- all other file attachments will be deleted unread) and art files under 1mb may also be submitted to eyecontact@setonhill.edu

LITERATURE: Entries must be typed (double-spaced), with the title included in the upper left hand corner of each page. Individual poems are limited to two pages and prose should not exceed ten pages in length. Please include a SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope) if you want your manuscript to be returned. If you submit your work electronically via e-mail, be sure to include all the required identifying information listed above in the body of the e-mail message or in a separately attached file.

ART/PHOTOGRAPHY: Entries are restricted to black and white works. (Occasionally, we can reproduce a color item in black and white, or select it as cover art). All art must have your name, address, e-mail, telephone number, media/medium, and title written on the back of the piece. Enclose a 3x5 card with your name, your college and a one-line biographical statement. Artwork will be returned by mail only if accompanied by appropriate postage. Eye Contact does not accept responsibility for work damaged in the mail. We can accept artwork via e-mail so long is the filesize is no larger than 1mb. We PREFER to receive any digital art submission on data CD, and will accept file sizes larger than 1mb that way. Digital submissions may be reprinted electronically in the magazine unless originals are provided. Most artwork in the magazine is either digitally photographed or scanned -- and reduced to scale for the magazine -- prior to publication.

NOTE: The above guidelines supercede previously published calls for submissions. Eye Contact reserves the right to reject any submission that does not follow these guidelines. Responses will not be given to submissions until after all material has been juried and selected -- usually two or three weeks after the deadline.

To order a sample copy, a donation of $3 is requested + $1.50 for off-campus postage. Send donations and mailing address to our campus box above, or contact a staff member.

Eye Contact Wins ASPA Award

The Fall 06-Spring 07 issue of Eye Contact received a "First Place with Special Merit" certificate from the American Scholastic Press Association. This juried award is based on a point-by-point analysis of the issue in comparison to other college magazines in the country. Congratulations to last year's staff!

EYE CONTACT: DEADLINE EXTENDED!
Submissions Wanted on Special Theme Issue, "Genesis"
LESS THAN A WEEK LEFT TO SUBMIT!

Due to a low number of submissions, the deadline for submitting writing and art to Eye Contact: The Literary/Art Magazine of Seton Hill University has been extended to SUNDAY OCTOBER 28th.

This term's issue will focus loosely on the theme of "GENESIS." This does not just refer to the first book of the Bible (though submissions on that topic are certainly welcome). By "genesis" we mean beginnings. Birth, dawn, origins, creations, and new formations are all applicable subject matter. Or perhaps you associate the word "genesis" with something else. BE AS CREATIVE AS YOU LIKE!

HOW TO SUBMIT:
See guidelines in a blog entry below. Due to the immediate need for material, e-mail submissions are preferred. Literature submissions may be e-mailed as a rich text file (.rtf or as text files only); artists may also submit digitized art or thumbnails (less than 1mb in size please) to eyecontact@setonhill.edu. Or mail submissions at least 24 hours before the deadline to Eye Contact at Campus Box 246.

SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE THIS SUNDAY OCT 28th by MIDNIGHT.

Next semester's "theme" will be REVELATIONS with a mid-February deadline. We look forward to considering your creative work!

This is only a test...

Seton Hill is upgrading its blogosphere with a new version of Movable Type. This is just a test entry with all sorts of strange things -- like that image above (my former Jenzabar avatar) to see how well things work on the EC blog.

Not sure what the difference is between "tags" and "keywords"... but I'll add some below.

Judging Session Oct 25

Calling all judges! Eye Contact is holding a literature and art judging session this Wednesday! Now is your chance to contribute to the magazine, judge some great artwork, prose and poetry and help us decide what's making the cut.

Our judging process is blind... which doesn't mean you'll be blindfolded. Rather, all of our lit and art submissions will be nameless, so know one will know who wrote what. Everyone who judges will have their name listed as a judge in this Fall's issue! There will also be some snacks provided! It's going to be a fun evening!

The judging session is being held in Admin 204 this Wednesday, Oct 25 at 8:00pm. Come for the whole time or just come for a little bit-- any help is appreciated! (And please bring a pen.)

All-Staff Meeting on Wednesday

Another school year is upon us, and with that comes two great new issues of Eye Contact! We will be holding an open meeting this Wednesday, September 13th in the Greensburg Room on campus. The meeting begins at 7:30pm, and there -may- be donuts there.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in helping out with the magazine. We're always looking for help--and since the majority of our editorial staff is graduating in the Spring, we could use some dedicated folks to take over for us. At the meeting, the current staff will talk about their roles in the magazine, as well the judging process that we go through to select entries.

Hope to see you there!

Spring 2006 Issue Now Available!

The Spring 2006 issue of Eye Contact is now available! Everyone on the staff is extremely proud of this issue, and we hope that all of our readers enjoy it. The magazine is currently being distributed on campus at Seton Hill University. If you would like to order an issue, please feel free to contact us!

Successful Judging

With what might be a record number of entries, the Eye Contact Spring 2006 Judging Session was a great success last night. There were 22 poems and 21 short stories, for a record total of 43 literature entries; and there were 38 pieces of art, of many media, that were judged.

Krispy Kremes greeted our judges, who worked with incredible efficiency. Thanks to all those that came to judge--we couldn't do it without you!

Stay tuned for the Spring 2006 issue. It's sure to be a good one!

Spring 2006 Judging Session!

The Judging Session for the Spring 2006 issue of Eye Contact will be held on Wednesday, March 1st in room 206 Admin. We'll begin at 8:45 pm, and judge, judge, judge until we've judged them all.

If you're not sure how "blind judging" works, or have never been to an Eye Contact judging before, read on... (Click the link, or click "Continue Reading" below for more about blind judging.)

DEADLINE Friday!

The deadline for all Eye Contact submissions is this Friday, February the 17th. Please see the guidelines for further information.

Questions? Email or leave a comment.

We look forward to receiving your work!

New Look!

For the new semester, the Eye Contact blog has an all new look!

Additionally, there are some "new and improved" features in the realm of functionality. The comments work again. The sidebar stays put. The links all work--including the email! And all of the little internal pages like "Comment Preview," "Comment Pending," and "Comment Error" all match up just great.

There is a possibility of adding more about the staff and Eye Contact's history at Seton Hill, but I'll know more about that happening after the staff meets up to see the new blog for the first time!

Get ready for a terrific semester, and the latest from Eye Contact!
