Those of you who have been keeping up with the exercises have already demonstrated that you have mastered the skills the exercises are designed to teach. Therefore, I’ve dropped this exercise from the syllabus, and instead changed Ex 6 (due Wednesday) so that it accomplishes part of what Ex 5 was intended to do.
If, however, you would like to write Ex 5 in order to strengthen your exercise grades, I will average your score in with all the other exercises. (If you are looking for a final grade boost, doing well on the Paper 2 revision is far more important than doing this optional exercise.)
If you do not write Ex 5, there will be no penalty. The full description is below.
Optional Ex 5
Write a personal essay, demonstrating your ability to engage with reviews, commentary, and discussion about How to Do Things with Video Games that you can find elsewhere on the internet.
Feel free to revisit or expand upon anything you have written (but avoid unnecessary summary).
- Be specific; instead of aiming to respond to the whole book, narrow your focus.
- Quote directly from some relevant part of the book or review you are citing.
This assignment does not ask for summary, or for your personal opinion (did you “like” or “relate to” something you have read). Instead, I ask you to assess what you learned, and connect it to other course material (such as, for instance, your exercises and papers, or games we have studied as a class).
