Technician 2: NAME
Vivian: Lucy, Countess of Bedford.
Technician 2:(checking a printout) I don’t see it here.
I think this is Vivian’s way of lightening an other wise horrible situation. Vivian uses humor and sarcasm thru the whole play, perhaps that is just her personality since she is very intellectual or perhaps when faced with the idea of dieing she used humor and sarcasm as a defense mechanism. Either way it made the play almost light-hearted and entertaining, instead of mainly tragic and such a sad story. The other Quote that proves this point is, Vivian: It is such a relief to get back to my room after those infernal tests. This is hardly true. It would be a relief to be a cheerleader on her way to Daytona beach for spring break.

I agree, as sad as the play was her humor and sarcasm did make it feel a bit more light hearted. I like that even though she is going through this terrible thing in life, she doesn’t lose her humor she uses it to try to lighten the situation.
I think the humor shows that though yes, death is scary, you don’t have to lose all hope or become completely depressed thinking about it. You can joke about death.

I think you’re right. The humor diffuses what would otherwise be a very grim play about death. It also shows that it’s okay laugh at death, just a little bit.
