National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education and Seton Hill Art Program Initiate New Project

The National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education (NCCHE), in collaboration with the Seton Hill University Art Program, will host a panel presentation at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 10th in the Greensburg Room to launch an exciting new project, "The Question Mark[er] Project." Panelists will include Sister Lois Sculco, vice president for mission and student life; Pati Beachley and Carol Brode, art faculty members; Dr. Michael Cary, professor of political science and history; and Diane Samuels, visiting artist.

Samuels, a member of the NCCHE advisory board, has had exhibits at the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Matress Factory Museum, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, the Leo Baeck Institute, the Center for Book Arts, and the Kim Foster Gallery in New York; and the Contemporary Arts Center in Cinncinnati, Ohio. Samuels' comissioned memorial The Alphabet Garden sits in Grafeneck, Germany, site "A" of the Nazi euthanasia experiments in 1940.

The purpose of the project is to initiate conversations/solutions/activism relating to history and current events, specifically about genocide. The project focuses on what questions we should ask about current events and history. Student artists will design and create markers illustrating questions submitted by the campus community as a result of these discussions.

Following the panel presentation, the campus community will be asked to submit questions about genocide and the Holocaust. The NCCHE will continue to solicit questions thru March 1st. Questions can be submitted through the "forms" section in Griffin's Lair under "Holocaust Center" beginning February 10th. Forms will also be available at the center in 313 Admin. Submissions should be turned in to Box 267K in the university post office.

After that date, a student and faculty advisory board will review the questions submitted. The final five will be sent to students in Beachley's "Advanced 3-D Media" class, who will ultimately decide which questions to develop into memorials.

The 1st student-designed mark(ers) will be placed in a location on campus during a special ceremony on April 23rd (time/place TBA).
