The Obligatory "Test" Post

|

Here we go... this week I will introduce about 30 students to the pleasures of blogging. First I'll start with the nine students in "Writing for the Internet," and then the 24 or so in "The Practice of Journalism". Some students are in both classes, and some already have weblogs. A few faculty members have expressed interest in blogs, too.

Schedule So Far:

  • Wednesday: Anil Dash (of MovableType) says I can host free blogs for all Seton Hill students and faculty.
  • Saturday Evening: Dave Cornelson (ISP) sets up MT for me and creates this test blog.
  • After a bit of difficulty logging on (Dave's e-mail spell-checker changed the password he tried to mail me, but I did manage to guess it) I try creating another test blog. Error messages galore. I change the password to something I can remember, since I forgot which guess was the successful one.
  • After reading the Movable Type maual, I realize Dave needs to give me a login/password so I can create directories on blogs.setonhill.edu.
  • Dave gives me the access, but since I changed the password, he can't work on the site.
  • Sunday Morning: I change the password back to what it was supposed to be, and now I create a test blog. I rename the blog and move it around a bit just to get to know what the system can do. For now, I think the blog has settled down as the "Rainbow Hector Weblog".

That brings me to today. Next on the agenda:

  • Monday afternoon: Demonstrate Movable Type for "Writing for the Internet" class. (I plan to blog a few entries, show everyone what Movable Type can do, and so forth.)
  • Wednesday morning: Introduce journalism students to blogging. (Collect their They won't really be studying blogging as a genre, except where it involves journalism. But they will be using it in order to participate in the cyberculture that gave rise to "new media journalism".
  • Wednesday afternoon: Create blogs for "Writing for the Internet" students.
  • Friday morning: With 24 students in the class, I'll probably need to create their blogs in advance.
