MetaFilter collects links questioning media coverage of Iraq
How bad is it really in Iraq? | Metafilter
How bad is it really in Iraq? The majority of the media stories have covered the attacks on American troops and the unrest among Iraqi citizens. But is that the full story?
The collection of links, along with the back-and-forth argument being carried out by liberals and conservatives in the comments, added quite a lot to the picture. One comment includes a list of 10 stories of good news in Iraq; another poster added four more. The cynical "quonsar" didn't bother to refute the previous 14 posts -- quonsar's reply was simply a link titled "Cinderalla marries prince." If you follow that link, you'll see a mock BBC news article about dogs denouncing Iraqi clerics. Was "quonsar" saying that all 14 of the previous links were made up?
One reason I enjoy blogs so much is watching little quirky battles like this playing out in the comments. Instead of trusting someone else to sort out all the details into a nifty little sound-bite package, these raw blogs try to give you a wide range of texts to read, so that you can come to your own conclusion. Of course, any list of links is going to be skewed towards the interests of the linst-maker... but the comments offer near-instantaneous oppurtunies for rebuttals, clarifications, and (if need be) retractions.
Try getting that from old media news.
