You have got to be kidding me, this article is absolutely ridiculous. I almost couldn't believe what I was reading. First and foremost the ending of the WUSA was very unfortunate for American soccer. It gave college grads a place to play after school and developed the talents of the younger players so they could move up to the internation level. Though this is unfortunate, I am glad to say that the MLS is stronger than ever and gaining more and more respect on the global soccer scene.
Trust me though I'm not naïve enough to think that everyone should love soccer. Women athletes and women in general should though be offended by such a chauvanist moron's views of sports.
What really does kill me though is how he goes on to describe how soccer is the "easy road," and requires no skill and no work. HAHAHAHAHA. Everyday in the summer I worked from 9-5 doing hard work, then came home and was dedicated enough that I ran between 3-5 miles 3 days a week and lifted the other days, all the while usually playing with some of my friends just because I love this game, and playing on a league team every sunday in the sweltering heat. Yes I know I'm rambling but I'm pretty fired up right now. The no skill thing is ridiculous. This guy probably has never actually watched a soccer game or even kicked a soccer ball. Now i'm not going to sit here and badmouth other sports, because I sure as hell can't hit a baseball, and I just plain suck at basketball, but scientists all over the world don't study how Randy Johnson can throw a fastball so fastor how Allen Iverson can hit 3's one after another... Though if you've ever heard of David Beckham, scientists and physics professors all over the world study how he can kick a ball with such force and spin that it can bend over a wall ten yards away and hit the bottom corner of a goal that stands only another 15 yards behind that(it really is amazing, i have video if you need proof). Just try and tell me that takes no skill, I really don't think there is any argument against that.
The last point I wanted to make is that in my 15 years of playing soccer, I have never felt that I was wasting my mind and body. I have made so many friends and been given so many opportunities through this sport. I am certainly not saying soccer alone got me to seton hill, my grades alone could have done that, by I had honestly never heard of this school before i was contacted to play soccer. Soccer opened the door for me to an incredible education while letting me continue playing. I also think that being responsible enough to maintain good grades and having practice or playing a game everyday is quite an accomplishment.
To end this long entry I would just like to say thank you if you actually read all this and sorry because I know I rambled a good bit, but this really got me going. Please leave some comments and tell me what you think.
godspeed
andrew

I did a search in the search engines on "sports hockey blog" and I found your web blog.
I am a Halifax Mooseheads Fan living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and thus my interest in searching for a hockey blog on the WWW as I thought about creating a blog on the Halifax Mooseheads hockey team. Anyways I read your whole blog to see if you had any information on how to operate a blog to see if I can understand the technology of operating a blog and from what I see I am somewhat hesitant at the present time. It may be too much for this old Halifax Mooseheads fan.
It was good reading though.
I will be back again.
Take care

This is off the subject, kind of. But since the word, "soccer" caught my eye, I was excited. My favorite international soccer team is Manchester United and Wolfsburg. I wish Beckham was still playing for Manchester United. Its great to lay back and relax on the weekends to a little international soccer on Fox Sports channel.
In much of the Western world and beyond, soccer where the sport is known as "football," soccer is the most popular sport. Other than Brandi Chastain (the women's soccer player famous for whipping off her shirt to celebrate a score), I know that there's a European football/soccer player named Beckham, whose popularity around the world rivals any US football or basketball star. I don't know his first name, and don't know what he looks like -- I only know about him because I saw a review of a movie called "Bend it like Beckham," and the reviewer explained that American audiences would have no idea what the movie was talking about.
Another soccer icon I can think of is the announcer who shouts "Goooooooal!". Google tells me his name is , but since searching for "Goooooooal!" is an imperfect research method, I might be wrong. Mabye somebody else says "Gooooooooooooal" and still another person says "Goooooooaaaal".
Hi Andrew, I liked your blog entry about soccer and thought that you did a great job of presenting and supporting your points. How about submitting a letter to the editor of PittsburgLive? http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/opinion/letters/send/
Andrew, if you could post a link to your blog -- or, better yet, to the permalink for that blog entry -- it would be easier for people to read and comment.
Brian's link doesn't seem to want to cooperate, so here's the address for the curious:

I agree. Soccer is a real sport. Even if it isn't an All-American sport like Football or Baseball. I think the drawback of soccer is that, like the author said, nearly everyone can do it. That doesn't mean they will be good at it, but they can do it. Football requires having the courage to take hit after hit from 300 pounds guys and be able to get up again and again for 60 minutes of play. Soccer is a lot less contact but it takes dedication to the sport to go far. Unlike basketball, where 7 foot people are naturally "good" (also subject to debate) at it. Soccer doesn't give you a stereotype. Most people would stereotype Basketballl players to be 6 foot plus and lean. Football players, for the most part, are muscled men of above average height. Hockey players are middle aged white men. Soccer players ... in my opinion are well rounded athletes with the stamina to run. You need not be a certain height or weight to perform well. Because of the lack of stereotype, Soccer can not find the Michael Jordan icon that other sports can. Pele was the last soccer icon that I have heard of and I have no idea what happened to him.
I can see, after watching womens soccer games, that it is not the most exciting sport out there, but that doesn't lessen the worth of the sports players.
Gosh, looks like I have rambled too.
