Well this is to get some points across that I thought I didn't talk about in class. I understand that "The Scarlet Letter" was in a time frame very different form today, but I can't seem to be able to call Dimmesdale's character a hero. It seems to me that he ran away from his problems. He put so much pressure on Hester and make it look like he turned his back on her as much as the town people. Someone in class said that in that time frame the position that you had had a great impact on how you were looked at in society. Well, my response to that since Dimmesdale had such a high position and was admired by the townspeople couldn't he do something to try and protect Hester as much as he could. I know that he would not be able to act to considered because that would give him up, but maybe he would of made her not get such a harsh punishment. Or maybe while she was standing on the platform he could of told her quietly that it would be ok to say the truth.

I don't see how any of Dimmesdale's actions would portray him as a strong charcter. I think he was one of the weakest people that I had ever read about. He completely only cared about his "reputation" in the town. I don't care that he felt "horribly" inside, he still had his pride-that's something that he took from Hester. He completely did not help Hester with the responsiblity of Pearl. He didn't acknowledge her at all. If anyone was to talk about a strong charcter it would be Hester. She by far, is an amazingly strong person. She took all the pain and accepted it. She still showed her face and made a good living for herself and her child. I think it's a disgrace how we still make excuses for the guy and how he suffered inside. I don't care. He didn't get any type of consequence for his actions that he commited. His actions could of changed something, perhaps the future of Pearl. I do not look up to the poor excuse of I man I think he should of been lynched because he should of never had the chance to even see his child grow up. If I had things my way he would of never lived to feel his so called "guilt."

Well think that weakness led her to forgive him because she just forgave him so gfast. I felt as though he had like this power over her - However he feels she accepts and tries her best to please him. In the book, it happened so fast it was almost disgusting. She just let down her hair and threw her letter because he wanted to clear his conscience. I think Hester's character would of shown strength if she stood her ground more. He caused her so much pain over the years it was unbelievable. i do think that Hester's character is strong, but showed weakness when she forgave him so easily. It didn't seem to me at the time when Hester forgave him that she had to swallow her pride. I interpreted it as she was saying, "It took you long enough" I just don't see strength in her character at that point of the story.

Just curious... why would you say weakness led her to forgive him? Maybe Hester's character is so strong that she can swallow her pride for the sake of a greater good?

I def. do not think Hester was wrong in hoping to be with Dimmesdale to form a family for Pearl I just think that she should not of accepted him so easily. He put her through years and years of pain and she happily forgave him. That makes me think that maybe Hester isn't as strong as I though. I don't think Hester was a poor judge of character I just think that she didn't think ahead sometimes. I felt that she often did stuff without thinking of the consequences.

So.. was Hester wrong in hoping to be with Dimmesdale to form a family for Perl? Was she a poor judge of character?
