Feed the Flag

To you, I ask this-

Stand by a flagpole. Close your eyes and hear the soft lapping from the brisk December breeze. Ask yourself: what ideals of the flag do you hold dear… what ideals do you give the flag? Open them to gaze upward at the commanding sight of a flag held firm and strong by its people, us.

Our flag is the flag of our people, not of our government, capitalist structure or other interpretation. As we ask ourselves questions of our role in that flag’s life, we feed the flag what it hungers for.

Yes, the big flag at the top of the driveway was really roaring in the wind... I had never before noticed that the sound that you hear when it is windy comes from things that the wind is blowing against, like trees or buildings. I don't know why I found it so striking to hear the wind coming from the flag.
