Yet college students don't often think about their health as much as they should, say health care personnel at some of the region's colleges and universities.
"I think when the kids get sick, that's when they get concerned," said Jan Beckage, coordinator of health education and a staff nurse in the wellness center at Seton Hill University in Greensburg. "They don't think about preventive kind of things."
College is very much like a daycare; one person gets sick and it's all over. Besides tackling the flu and colds, I recently became aware of another health concern facing college students. College students have limited free time and usually end up frequenting fast food restaurants. Last night in Nutrition for Life, I realized how unhealthy this is. The amount of fat, calories, and sodium in fast food is overwhelming. Exact health info can be found on any fast food website. Just some food for thought... A Burger King Whopper has 1,060 calories and 69 grams of total fat, and every time you "super-size" your meal the calories go up. We all need the occasional Big Mac or Whopper, but just remember to use moderation.
I'll do my best to keep from getting laryngitis this year, but no promises... i get it pretty consistently. *sigh*
