Textbooks (and movies) for Videogaming Course

| | Comments (3) | TrackBacks (0)

Below are the books for EL250, "Videogaming." Shortly after this term's grades are posted, I'll put up a whole website for the course, but for now I'll just post the info here. (I have already posted a brief description of the "Video Gaming" course.)

If you're itching to get started on the reading, I invite you to take a look at (or listen to) Storytelling in Computer Games (full-text transcript and audio download of a panel I put together almost 5 years ago)

Over the break, while you are waiting for your books to arrive, I'm assigning some movies for you to watch.

Rent and watch two of the following:

Tron (1982)
WarGames (1983)
Big (1988)
Spy Kids 3-D (2003)

I'd welcome suggestions for additional movies that include depictions of video games and those who play them.

Rent and watch any two of the following:

*The Truman Show
*Capricorn One *(probably hard to find, but very good)
*Matrix)

*Groundhog Day
*Sliding Doors
*It's a Wonderful Life

(The first group is about simulations, and the second group features alternate reality or replayability.)

At this point, I am not thinking of movies based on videogames, such as Tomb Raider, Doom, or -- shudder -- Super Mario Brothers. (I'd be open to letting you use one of those movies as part of your final project.)

It will be okay for the first couple days, but we'll be focusing on the readings intensely in the first half of the class, so that could be a problem.

I am moving back to campus on the 6th of January, so due to possible delay in shipping. I am sending my books to Seton Hill. Is this okay that I don't have them for 5 days or so?
