What exactly does New Media Journalism mean?

From the Seton Hill Universtiy website:

[ As a student of Journalism New Media (JNM), you aim to develop expert communication skills and master a wide variety of writing modes. The JNM program emphasizes using the Internet as a tool for critical research, writing, and thinking. Reaching a 21st-century audience involves integrating cutting edge media skills (including web design and e-mail etiquette) with the traditional journalistic activities (such as reporting the news and writing magazine articles). These important, highly transferable skills will help you succeed as you "learn the ropes," preparing you for highly competitive positions such as entertainment, sports, or opinion writers - or for countless other professions where communication is important. ]

The word journalism generally sparks thoughts of print or television, maybe even radio journalism. The emergence of the internet opened up endless new possibilities for journalists. The inernet allows for instant updates of breaking news, and viewer interaction through website features such as photo slideshows and video. The New Media Journalism major is enriched with the study of online journalism, as well as traditional methods. Students will learn how to use the latest software and technology, such as Flash, and weblogs, to bring news to the world with the click of a mouse.

The New Media Journalism major also includes the study of traditional journalism, through courses such as News Writing and Media Lab. Media Lab is a course taken for 1 or zero credits for participation on the student paper, The Setonian.

Working on the Setonian staff gives students a chance to gain experience in copy-editing, layout design, writing news, features, opinion, editorial, arts & entertainment, and sports articles, as well as photography. Each section has an editor, and the role of production manager is vital to the paper as well. Setonian staff members also have the opportunity to hold business manager and public relations positions.

Writing for the Setonian Online is another option to gain hands on experience in publishing news. The Setonian Online is also run on a MovableType weblog and is totally produced by students. Exclusive articles and photos are posted online aside from the content of the print version. Copy-editing and photo-editing positions are also offered through the Setonian Online.
