Man Faces Charges After Mothers' Death

Police have charged a Greensburg man in relation to his mothers’ death last year. Allegedly, he was her caretaker and neglected to help her after she was burned in an accidental fire.

Victor McCurdy, 22, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and neglect of a care-dependent person after his mother, Rosemary McCurdy, 53, died last year. He appeared before District Judge James Albert yesterday.

On the day of her death, Mrs. McCurdy was taken to the hospital. Greensburg police described her as“…dehydrated, unkempt, and lying in her own filth” “… She weighed 70 pounds,”

The fire was caused by her smoking while on oxygen, police said. Also, she had little or no leg use due to multiple sclerosis, which she had for 17 years.

According to the Westmoreland County coroner’s office, she died from severe burns to her face, chest, and airway. It is accidental in manner, as she refused medical treatment after the fire.

Detectives could not be reached for comment.

Mr. McCurdy has a hearing Thursday. He is out on bond.

I’m guessing there will be a follow-up on Thursday.
