The Political Machine [Game Review]

| | Comments (2)

Ubisoft's presidential election game, "The Political Machine," is enjoyable, particularly if you're caught up in the political hoopla and just can't get enough of it. The designers have produced an entertaining game that involves making the electoral college system work for you.

By default, the game starts you off as John Kerry playing against George W. Bush, which means your first time out, you are sure to see Kerry crushed by W (at least until you figure out how the game works, or change the settings). My first time through the game, I was impressed to find George W. Bush setting up campaign headquarters in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida -- exactly the battleground states that I as Kerry was targeting.

However, again playing as Kerry, it was far too easy to take Texas away from the Republicans by buying lots of advertisements trumpeting myself as the candidate who opposes crime and supports the war on terror. Likewise, as Bush, I easily took New York away from Kerry with the same message, and wrested California from the liberals by smearing Kerry's record on the environment.

Poynter Online - Auletta to Journalists: Walk Humbly, Adjudicate Truth, and Embarrass the Powerful

Auletta, who writes the Annals of Communication column for The New Yorker magazine, delivered the Naughton Lecture Sunday at Poynter.

He said the ability to listen is a journalist's most important attribute.

Feeling Haunted? Have a supernatural experience that you are dying to share? Have you visited a haunted location in the Greensburg area? Have you experienced the paranormal in your life? Have you ever seen a ghost? Have you been haunted by spirits? Do you have weird tales of Ouija boards? Anything else freaky that you'd like to share?

I wanna hear about it! I -know- we've got some SHU ghost stories, but I'm also interested in anything in Greensburg and the surrounding areas. You don't have to believe that the story is true; I just wanna hear about it!

Tell Your Ghost Stories

    Free Lunch at City Deli

    | | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

At this very moment in downtown Greensburg a new business, City Deli, is practising a marketing technique that may prove to be a brilliant visionary tactic, or if the concept fails, a sure step towards the demise of yet-another unsuccessful business venture in Greensburg. The business is City Deli on 124 South Main Street, right next door to St. Vincent de Paul, across the street from Citizen's Bank.

Right now, and until the end of the day, City Deli is giving each and every potential customer who walks in their door a free deli sandwich, no strings attached. When the store opens officially on November 1st, these sandwiches will retail for $5.99. The menu features eight different sandwich varieties on three different types of bread with three choices of cheese.

The theme of Freedom in Huckleberry Finn.

Many themes can be identified throughout this story, but what was very evident in the story was the theme of freedom.

This theme is very clear early on in the book, beginning in Chapter 1. In this chapter we see Huck already struggling with the widow Douglas as she attempts to ‘civilize’ him. Huck complains about the cramped feeling he gets when the widow puts him in new clothes, he complains about the structure of school, and he especially is unhappy with the rituals before dinner. He wonders, “When you got to the table you couldn’t go right to eating…” Although Huck has adjusted to this structured lifestyle, it is clear that he wants adventure.

Another aspect of the story that is suppressing Huck is his Pap. The character of Pap is vividly displayed, and so is Huck’s fear of him. Unfortunately for Huck, a judge hands him over to Pap, and not Huck has lost total freedom. He is locked in both day and night. Even though Huck does express that he is somewhat comfortable with the unstructured ness of living with Pap, as opposed to the widow, he is not happy.
After planning a crafty escape, Huck flees from Pap’s cabin and is free.

The character of Jim also exemplifies freedom. To Jim, freedom is more than important. When Jim and Huck meet up in chapter 8, Jim was trying to free himself. He was trying to free himself from Miss Watson who was threatening to sell him south, and he was escaping the suspicion that he was Huck’s murderer.

The theme of freedom can also be looked at from a social point of view. Society at this time was at a struggle for freedom. War and slavery were upon the biggest issues of this time. The concept of Freedom vs. Confinement is evident in both Huck’s life and Huck’s society.

Can you think of any other aspects of the book that relates to the concept of freedom an/or confinement?

    Simpsons!!!

    | | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

The Simpsons, created by Executive Producer Matt Groening, is the longest running sitcom to date. From my experience, people are either fans or are completely turned off by the idea of them. I for one am a huge fan. I've been asked why? before and I'm really not sure. It's just one of those things, you know. There are far too many characters in the Simpsons to name them all but the main characters are Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

As exciting as this crazy yellow family is, they really step up the entertainment when there are guests on the show. Former guests include Aerosmith, Ernest Borgnine, Albert Brooks, James Brown, Cypress Hill, Tom Jones, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ringo Starr, Meryl Streep, Bette Midler, and Bob Newhart. There are many others so please visit the Guest page for more information. If you're interested, re-runs are on at 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. weekdays and there is a new episode on every Sunday at 8:00 p.m. I know this is probably a longshot but I'm hoping run into Simpsons fanatic as dedicated as myself.

Haha.....good or bad, I'm looking forward to the comments.

    Blogging Design and Appeal

    | | Comments (0)

Blogging design and appeal can be very crucial to the amount of traffic a particular blogger may receive. Just like anything else a blog is more attractive if it is decorated with color, appealing text, and minimal graphics (looks like I should take my own advice, huh!). When researching this topic I chose to compare two random blogs and determing which one was more appealing to me. The two blogs I chose to compare are Best Practices for Microsoft Business Intelligence and Pesky "Page Cannot Be Displayed Error". Although they are both meet my interests the "Pesky" blog, done in a bright orange color, grabbed my attention much earlier than the "Best Practices" blog which was done in a boring, darker fashion.

Some of the common design effects though were links to other bloggers of the same interests and links to other technology based logs. If business technology tickles your fancy I highly recommend visiting these sites. Also, If you would like to obtain more information about blogging design and appeal please visit Neha's site.

We've pondered, deliberated, banged our heads against each others and we finally have a date for Eye Contact's judging sessions.

    Ahhh… the Scarlet Letter

    Retro Poetry Slam

    | | Comments (4) | TrackBacks (0)

To be honest, I was petrified to go through with this thing. It is one thing to read a poem, but to act it out in front of the class, well that's a wnole different ballgame. I can say that after presenting, though it did not go quite as I had practiced, I was relieved and proud to have gone through with it, sucked it up, and completed the assignment. The performances were awsome and to say the least I was certiantly intimidated to follow any of my classmates acts. But hey I'm learning right?
I was surprised to find the various elements and techniques that involves expressing a poem. The use of ones voice to create a mood, or physical motions, or props all have great significance in the deliverance of the poem. The slightest change in tone or position is able to create depth, meaning, and displays the emotions as the reader presents their own unique interpretation of the works. This assignment gave the class insight on how the performer percieved the poems' meaning in the way the deliverance was made.

    Official NaNoWriMo 2004 Participant

    Cuz I am!!!

    From the *official* Nanowrimo website:

    What is NaNoWriMo?

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

From Hawthorne's point of viw,, all the unfairness and miserable life were regarded as the battle of wondering what is “good’ and what is “bad”, but his view about conscience was bounded by the doctrine of religious. in this novel, his opinion was kind of fragile and weak. For instance, in Chapter-13, he wrote, “It is to the credit of human nature, that,…, it loves more readily than it hates. Hatrd, by a gradual and quiet process, will even be transformed to love…” These sentences made me feel more stressful than thrilling when i was reading them, because Dimmesdale found his conscience at last and tried to compensate all of suffering little Pearl had.

Hey everybody, I just wanted to let people know that I'm the newest blog on the block. I figured if I don't tell anyone about it, no one will visit it, and then where's the fun in that? So go to, read it, and don't mind my slight touch of insanity.

This is just a reminder, since alot of the members in the club miss my e-mails, that this evening there is going to be a very important meeting of the SHU College Republicans. We will be meeting down at the Victory Center, which is across from the Court House downtown, at 7PM. Anyone who needs a ride should be outside of the Harlan Gallery no later than 6:50PM.

At the meeting we will be discussing presidential debates, debates at SHU and UPG, and other important events coming up. We will also be watching the documentary "Kerry on Iraq," which is a fifteen minute montage of clips showing John Kerry's various positions on the war in Iraq. All this, and we will be back on the Hill before the Vice Presidential debate tonight.

Anyone is welcome! Club members should do their best to attend!

    OJC brief

Aspiring online journalists should be willing to experiment and think outside the box, Moor said. They have to be "schizophrenic" in their ability to multitask in an ever-changing medium. That includes working in teams, solo assignments, and "having a sensibility for all media."

    LOL in Lysistrata

    | | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

    Hello Everybody,
I saw Lysistrata in Reeves Theater yesterday, it was so "vulgarily" funny but the great part about it is the underlying message (and the half naked people--->J/K).

I asked some people what they thought about Lysistrata and here are what they said:

"Good acting, lots of energy and a very good earthy type of sense of humor."
    ~ Jay Hollinsworth, Monroeville

"I thought it was good and funny...it's nice to see a show about women using their minds."
~Danielle Brino-Dean, Wife of the Directore of SHU theater program

"It's funny, it's crazy, great laughs!"
~Laura Sorrells, First year student SHU

"It's fantastic, [it's] a different play from what I'm used to seeing."
~Jen Collins, First Year Student SHU

"It's a good way to pass the time."
~Gary Hughes, First Year Student SHU

"I wish I did not laugh so much because I missed some of the dialogue."
~Sue Kriznik, Mother of SHU Junior Diane Kriznik

There you have it, the people has spoken, go and see it for yourself and bring some friends along!

I was wondering if Henry David Thoreau knew about this war in Iraq much before we did...
