Schools show new students the ropes - PittsburghLIVE.com

Seton Hill University in Greensburg uses reading material as a way for freshmen to get together at the beginning of the year. The university gives a free book to every student and have a discussion on it early in the first semester.

"It's a good bonding experience, and a great introduction to the sort of literate college life we hope to foster at Seton Hill," said Dr. Michael Arnzen, an English instructor at Seton Hill.

The books are distributed to the students during orientation sessions.

Yet college students don't often think about their health as much as they should, say health care personnel at some of the region's colleges and universities.

"I think when the kids get sick, that's when they get concerned," said Jan Beckage, coordinator of health education and a staff nurse in the wellness center at Seton Hill University in Greensburg. "They don't think about preventive kind of things."

Welcome back!

I'm so glad to see everybody! It's not the same place without all the people floating about, that's for sure.

There's a lot of excitement in the air, and plenty of new things going on here at the Hill to keep things interesting. A gigantic freshman class, a new football team, co-ed residence halls, new people in new positions for faculty and staff... and so much more.

Three cheers for a new semester! Let's make it a good one.

I've been busy getting my courses ready for Monday, but here's a good feature on SHU football that's worth a look.

Former women's college starts football team - PittsburghLIVE.com

Up until four years ago, Seton Hill University and women's higher education were synonymous.

Then, in 2001, the male gender was welcomed on campus and for the first time could enter any field that Seton Hill offered.

This year, the men of Seton Hill have the opportunity to enter into another kind of field--the football field.

This year, the Seton Hill Griffins football team is born.

Follow the escapades of Dodge Intrepid, a world famous librarian, and his sidekick/intern Pluck Gumption as they travel through time chasing their arch nemesis Allister Farious and his goon No Goodnick. Dodge and his trusty intern must rely on their wits and library skills to apprehend Farious, who, with the help of an ancient time-traveling book, is trying to reclaim the thrown to the lost Prussian empire.

I have spent a good part of my summer writing this radio show with fellow Cellar Dweller James Catullo. It began as a simple project: something to perform at Cafe Kolache, the coffee shop we frequent, but has since turned into something bigger. What was once just a plan for one episode has spawned into four. What was once a cast of two has become a cast of three (Christoph has joined to lend us his voice talent). What was once just a live performance has turned into a podcast with plans for CDs and possibly even DVDs. It looks like the library is going to back in business.

And so, as a small tease, you can listen to a radio trailer for the debut performance of the Dodge Intrepid radio show! Just click here and it should download or begin playing. It's a meager 500k MP3 that packs enough excitement and comedy to ripen a banana.

"Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time" Episodes 1-4 • Saturday, August 27th • Cafe Kolache, 3rd St. Beaver, PA • 7:00PM • All ages and free admission.

Non-cash gifts could dwindle if law is changed - PittsburghLIVE.com

In the late 1980s, Seton Hill accepted a horse for its equestrian team. As a result, the school had to rent a stable, buy hay and exercise the horse when students were on summer vacation.

"I can remember our chief financial officer saying to me:, 'This horse has to go.' It was eating us out of house and home," Boyle recalled.

"Fortunately, it died pretty quickly."

The newest Cellar Dweller show "American Splenda" is this Friday for one night only in Beaver County. I am saddened that we aren't doing it more than once in the county, because I know a bunch of the folks that normally come to our shows are working that night. Alas, due to various circumstances, and a desire to keep things for this show relatively small (allowing us to work on bigger things to come this fall... hint hint!), we are just doing one performance in the BC. However, I hope for a grand audience waiting for receive this great show... so if anyone who reads this blog is interested in driving to Beaver County, to the Community College of Beaver County, just comment or e-mail me and I will guide you.

Friday, August 12th at CCBC's Allied Health Auditorium (Building 6). Show begins at 8:00PM, admission is a mere $5.00. Following the performance, we will have an improv workshop at our theater in Rochester from 10PM to midnight

Popular blog search Web site Technorati posted a report on the growth of blogs that shows that, on average, the number of blogs is doubling every five-and-a-half months. As of last month, more than 80,000 blogs were created daily, with a new blog created every second, the report found. Technorati tracks more than 14.2 million blogs. About 55 percent of all new bloggers are considered active, or had a posting in the last three months and about 13 percent update at least weekly, according to the study.
