Final Presentation Gallery -- Jerz: New Media Projects (EL405)
Final Presentation Gallery
"New Media Projects" introduces students to Inform 7, The Games Factory 2, Flash, Blender 3D, and Hammer. All students completed short projects in each medium, and selected a tool to use for a midterm and a final project.
Students kept a development journal on their weblogs, and often helped each other get past rough spots. Since few of my students had any programming experience, there were some rough spots and tense times, but there were also grand "aha!" events that accumulated as the semester progressed. I'm pleased with what my students accomplished.
See the list of final project postings.
Seton Hill University is a private, Catholic university located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Seton Hill is a liberal arts university, and all majors are required to complete the liberal arts core curriculum. As with all majors at Seton Hill, the New Media Journalism major has specialized courses which are also required.
The full Seton Hill University course catalogue is available here. New Media Journalism is an ungergraduate major.
What exactly does New Media Journalism mean?
From the Seton Hill Universtiy website:
[ As a student of Journalism New Media (JNM), you aim to develop expert communication skills and master a wide variety of writing modes. The JNM program emphasizes using the Internet as a tool for critical research, writing, and thinking. Reaching a 21st-century audience involves integrating cutting edge media skills (including web design and e-mail etiquette) with the traditional journalistic activities (such as reporting the news and writing magazine articles). These important, highly transferable skills will help you succeed as you "learn the ropes," preparing you for highly competitive positions such as entertainment, sports, or opinion writers - or for countless other professions where communication is important. ]
The word journalism generally sparks thoughts of print or television, maybe even radio journalism. The emergence of the internet opened up endless new possibilities for journalists. The inernet allows for instant updates of breaking news, and viewer interaction through website features such as photo slideshows and video. The New Media Journalism major is enriched with the study of online journalism, as well as traditional methods. Students will learn how to use the latest software and technology, such as Flash, and weblogs, to bring news to the world with the click of a mouse.
The New Media Journalism major also includes the study of traditional journalism, through courses such as News Writing and Media Lab. Media Lab is a course taken for 1 or zero credits for participation on the student paper, The Setonian.
Working on the Setonian staff gives students a chance to gain experience in copy-editing, layout design, writing news, features, opinion, editorial, arts & entertainment, and sports articles, as well as photography. Each section has an editor, and the role of production manager is vital to the paper as well. Setonian staff members also have the opportunity to hold business manager and public relations positions.
Writing for the Setonian Online is another option to gain hands on experience in publishing news. The Setonian Online is also run on a MovableType weblog and is totally produced by students. Exclusive articles and photos are posted online aside from the content of the print version. Copy-editing and photo-editing positions are also offered through the Setonian Online.

Thank you for visiting the New Media Journalism website at Seton Hill University
At Seton Hill University (SHU), free MovableType weblogs are given to students upon request. Any student or faculty member with a weblog at SHU has the ability to post on the New Media Journalism weblog. At SHU, we simply like to call the weblogs 'blogs' for short.
All New Media Journalism majors at SHU receive a blog through classes taught by Dennis G. Jerz, associate professor of English and adviser of The Setonian, the school newspaper.
What exactly is a weblog? Jerz explains on his Literacy Weblog.
Students and faculty members log on to the SHU blogosphere through the main page This page displays the most recently posted entries and comments.
Blogging is used at SHU academically and recreationally. Jerz utilizes weblogs in the classroom to post assignments and allow students to interact with each other. By blogging, students have the ability to bounce project ideas off one another, and share their progress in class.

BBC NEWS | Programmes | Click | Papers battle online news sites
"If you offer on your website the exact same content as in your newspaper, why would people buy the newspaper? It makes no sense economically," said Mr Rousselot.
"But if you show people that the content on the website is only made richer in the newspaper the next morning because what you have on the website in terms of news is becoming an analysis, is becoming a report from abroad, is becoming some kind of a huge interview on the newspaper, then there is a sense to it."
While web strategy is being bandied around as the sink or swim buzzword of the moment, newspapers freely admit that no-one really knows for sure whether what they are doing is going to pay off in the end.
Clearing the career path - Tribune-Review
Many students don't realize that the work hasn't ended when they pass their last final or turn in their last term paper, he says. His experiences with student job-seekers motivated him to self-publish a book, "The 7 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Graduated" (Authorhouse, $11.99).
"There's also a little bit of an entitlement mentality among college students," says Driscoll, 25. "They really have unrealistic expectations as to salary. I do a lot of mock interviewing. Either they have no idea what they should be making, which means they haven't done any research, or their expectations are too high."
