Untitled1Pittsburgh Sports Report, Inc. publishes a bi-monthly sports newspaper (Pittsburgh Sports Report), a bi-monthly magazine for parents of young athletes (KidSPORTS Magazine) and maintains daily-updated websites and social media platforms. Interns are expected to contribute to any and/or all of the publications, both hardcopy and/or online.

Pittsburgh Sports Report Intern Responsibilities

  • Interns will write several stories per month for our publications/website. These may include game recaps, sidebars, Q&A pieces, short articles or feature stories or various lengths.
  • Interns will be required to handle several (6-10) game/event recaps per month. These are to be compiled immediately following the events and are to be turned in within two hours after the game/event has been completed. Interns are expected to access game information via the internet – only games where this information is available will be assigned for recaps.
  • Interns will receive assignments and deadlines, and be expected to work on them independently – although the editor will be available to guide the students.
  • Interns will be responsible for conducting interviews, both over the phone and in person, as well as research and editing assignments.
  • Every effort will be made to coordinate opportunities for interns to attend professional and/or collegiate games in person, as well as press conferences and other related events, as members of the working press.
  • Research may consist of internet research, phone interviews, person-to-person interviews and tracking down information, contacts and sources.
  • Interns will need to tailor their writing styles for each publication, display a desire to learn, and a willingness to attack whatever stories are assigned to them.

As a small company, interns are vital to our success. We spend hours interviewing interns and are very selective when making hires for this very reason. Interns will be given the chance to contribute at nearly the same level as our more experienced freelance writers.

Interns must be self-motivated and able to complete assignments on deadline and on their own time, as their supervisor is not located in Pittsburgh and most contact will be via phone or email,

Pittsburgh Sports Report Intern Requirements

  • Internships at the Pittsburgh Sports Report are UNPAID.
  • Interns are NOT required to report to PSR offices. The majority of the work will be done independently.
  • Travel is not required, but is possible if agreed upon by both parties.
  • Internships are available year-round, typically as follows, although we will work with our interns to create a schedule that is suitable for both parties.
    • “Spring” – January through April
    • “Summer” – May through August
    • “Fall” – September through December
  • PSR does not require a specific grade level or course completion for interns. We do expect our interns to have college-level experience in newspaper and/or magazine writing. Actual experience with college or local publications is preferred, but not required. Coursework can, in some cases, be a reasonable substitute.
  • College graduates are encouraged to apply for internships at PSR as well.
