It is an online J-term course, so you can take it from anywhere where there’s internet access - you don’t have to be at SHU during J-Term.

In the last decade, a growing number of scholars have noticed the importance of video games to modern culture, as a form of story telling, as a form of teaching, and as a form of social commentary.

This course explores the nature of "fun," how "fun" is created and used by game designers, and how games reflect and shape the values of the culture in which they exist.

Assignments will include a review (written for people who haven’t played the game), a personal essay (designed to be informative to audiences that may or may not have played the game) and an academic study (for people who already know the game well, or who are more interested in what your study argues than a summary of the game itself). There will also be informal writing and other peer-based assignments that help me keep track of your ability to follow the readings.

In the first part of the course, we will look into gaming history and play some older games that are freely available on the internet. In the second part of the course, we will read academic scholarship, on both older games and more recent ones. In the third part of the course, you would pick a game that you know well, and do a research project that includes some form of creative presentation to your peers, and also an academic paper.

There is no final exam; many students opt to take an extra week or so to submit their final paper, and turn it in shortly after the Spring classes have begun.

I would be happy to answer any questions about this course.

Michelle Cousins of Manor was attacked by her husband, Wesley Cousins of Washington township. Prior to this, she filed a protection from abuse order against him.

The incident took place when he went to her house armed with a pistol. He fired several shots, causing damage to her abdomen and hand. She called 911 and was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Nothing has been released from the hospital.

Her husband was found dead in a bedroom with a self-inflicted bullet wound to the chest.

This is really all the article says about the actual shooting. The rest is about domestic violence cases in the past month or so. It just elaborates on that for a while. I don't want to bore you with it like they did to me. Here's the link:http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/leadertimes/news/s_647620.html

It just seems like they needed to fill a bunch of space so they spewed out a bunch of information.

What if I just did that?

Pajamas are awesome! I like cake. Agh. Now there's cake on my pajamas. That's not cool.

Everyone likes cake and pajamas, but it's an understanding between humans and should never be written. It's also an understanding that domestic violence is bad, therefore it doesn't need constant mention. The story itself indicates that domestic violence leads to attempted murder/suicide, therefore it's bad. I'm sorry for rabbling. It really annoyed me.

Most obituaries that I have read have been short and sweet. This obituary seems to go on to tell the entire life story of Marie Byrne. I am not intending to say that Marie Bryne's life should not be celebrated, but I believe that her obituary should emphasize the importance of her life rather than the fact that she had a family friend that the kids called "Uncle Mary." Her obituary should be entirely dedicated to her and not the lives of others. Obviously her surviving relatives are important to her life, but I do not think that a newspaper should print anything else about them.

However, I do believe that showing how Marie Byrne was a down to earth, "tough" woman was very important within the context of the obituary. Readers should be able to comprehend the impact of someone's life on society without having to know what they made for dinner every night.
