SHU Grad Student Wins $25000 on ''Millionaire''

heidi ruby miller: Millionaire Viewing Party

If you didn't catch the show, I used my last two lifelines (including calling Toby), but missed the $50,000 question so went home with $25,000. That and the experience of working with the people on the show was worth the wait in line at auditions and the trip to New York. It was all truly incredible.

Get a Box

No flash drive? No problem. Email server down? No problem. All you need is a box.

I was recently introduced to a really nice online storage facility called box.net. (Thank you, Mike!) It's a free private gigabyte, and you can upload anything from anywhere. Want to share with others? If they have a box.net account you can share directly. And, unlike some sites like Flickr where everyone can see everyone else's stuff, on box.net only the people you allow to see your files can see or download them.

I've started using this as a replacement for that old "I'll email it to myself" trick. If it just-so-happens that my email of choice is having downtime, the email didn't get sent, I forgot the attachment, or the file is corrupted, I can still get to my stuff in my box! (If anyone can't guess, this has happened to me a couple of times...)

This is also an alternative to a flash drive since it's a whole gig of space. You don't have to take the risk of the files not being readable by another computer, or the risk of forgetting your little USB guy in the school's computer... forever losing the files and the drive itself...

I shared this information with Dr. Jerz and he asked me to share with all of you out there in the blogging world :) No, box.net isn't paying me, but they should, because I recommend it as an online storage facility. Get yourself a box.

Live Radio Show in Beaver County!

My radio show, "Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time," will be performed live this Saturday, November 5th, at Cafe Kolache in Beaver County. The show will feature four brand new episodes and feature myself, along with three members of the Cellar Dwellers, providing all of the voices and sound effects. Our first performance like this was two months ago, and it debuted to a great audience... so I would invite anyone that can drive out to Beaver County (about an hour and fifteen minutes from SHU), it's more than likely well worth your time. The show is free, and will last from 7PM until 9PM.

Of course if you can't make it, the studio recordings of the four new episodes are being released as podcasts each week over the next month. A live recording of Saturday's show will also be released. For more info, and past episodes, check out the Library Aids Blog!

Our exciting radio show follows Dodge Intrepid, a world famous librarian/adventurer, and his intern Pluck Gumption as they try to save the printed word from a maniacal gypsy-industrialist named Allister Farious. The show is filled with wit, literature, and adventure. And, of course, its for all audiences (although I don't think the youngins will get our Petrarch reference.)

Calling All Knitters: SHU's Newest Club Needs YOU!

So, kids, you wanna get knitty? I'm investigating the possibility of starting an SHU Knitting Club: basically, we'd get together every other week or so and knit up a storm. I have a few people who have already expressed interest in getting involved and I have a faculty member or two in mind who might be interested in being our advisor. I need to know names and phone numbers of anyone who might be interested in joining. Also, I need to know if you are interested in holding an office for the club. I have a couple of projects in mind for the club:

The first idea is a Peace Quilt - each member knits 10 by 10 inch squares in a certain color scheme (to be decided by the club!) and then these squares get sewn together to form a nifty quilt that we could use somehow to raise money for our cause (whatever cause we decide on collectively). We could either display the quilt or auction it off to the highest bidder. I was thinking our quilt could have a theme (both colors and otherwise). If we get official club status, we might be able to get funding to cover the cost of yarn.

The second idea is to make items to be donated to various charities: for instance, Campus Ministry has a silent auction in December to raise money for various campus activities. We could knit hats and scarves to be put on a silent auction or set prices for our items. Or we could make a bunch of hats and scarves and send them somewhere in the world to underpriviledged kids and teens... I dunno, like in Alaska or something?

These are just ideas: I think it would be awesome not only to start a knitting club but to have collective projects that would benefit the greater community. I'd like to have a meeting with anyone interested in order to really think about our mission and goals. If you are interested in joining a knitting club and/or becoming an officer, please get in touch. If you know anyone who might be interested, please spread the word. I'm especially interested in any underclasspeople who might want to join: while I'll more than likely serve as president this semester, I'm graduating in May and would like to start a club that could stick around for a while!

If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please leave a comment. If you are interested in joining, please email me with your name, class, phone number, and schedule of availability. And, oh yeah, if you have any ideas for possible projects and/or an advisor, I'd appreciate your input on that as well. I'd like to have a club form to submit to Student Senate by the end of the week if possible in order to get started and have our first meeting.

Happy birthday, NMJ!

With September 2005 rolling right in, and the first entries written by newbie bloggers, NMJ has officially turned 2!

Hard to believe it's been that long. But it's been a long, purposeful journey full of growth and fun, so it's a good thing to celebrate! Hey, that means my blog (and anyone else whose blog was created in the first set at SHU) is also two years old! Holy cow.

Happy birthday, blogs!

"Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time" Radio Show Preview!

Action! Adventure! Comedy! All rolled into one exciting radio program, created as an homage to the 1940 radio serials. Follow the escapades of Dodge Intrepid, a world famous librarian, and his sidekick/intern Pluck Gumption as they travel through time chasing their arch nemesis Allister Farious and his goon No Goodnick. Dodge and his trusty intern must rely on their wits and library skills to apprehend Farious, who, with the help of an ancient time-traveling book, is trying to reclaim the thrown to the lost Prussian empire.

Download and listen to the radio trailer!

I have spent a good part of my summer writing this radio show with fellow Cellar Dweller James Catullo. It began as a simple project: something to perform at Cafe Kolache, the coffee shop we frequent, but has since turned into something bigger. What was once just a plan for one episode has spawned into four. What was once a cast of two has become a cast of three (Christoph has joined to lend us his voice talent). What was once just a live performance has turned into a podcast with plans for CDs and possibly even DVDs. It looks like the library is going to back in business.

And so, as a small tease, you can listen to a radio trailer for the debut performance of the Dodge Intrepid radio show! Just click here and it should download or begin playing. It's a meager 500k MP3 that packs enough excitement and comedy to ripen a banana.

"Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time" Episodes 1-4 • Saturday, August 27th • Cafe Kolache, 3rd St. Beaver, PA • 7:00PM • All ages and free admission.

Latest Cellar Dweller Show for One Night Only

The newest Cellar Dweller show "American Splenda" is this Friday for one night only in Beaver County. I am saddened that we aren't doing it more than once in the county, because I know a bunch of the folks that normally come to our shows are working that night. Alas, due to various circumstances, and a desire to keep things for this show relatively small (allowing us to work on bigger things to come this fall... hint hint!), we are just doing one performance in the BC. However, I hope for a grand audience waiting for receive this great show... so if anyone who reads this blog is interested in driving to Beaver County, to the Community College of Beaver County, just comment or e-mail me and I will guide you.

Friday, August 12th at CCBC's Allied Health Auditorium (Building 6). Show begins at 8:00PM, admission is a mere $5.00. Following the performance, we will have an improv workshop at our theater in Rochester from 10PM to midnight

Anyone looking for a computer?

I'm not trying to turn this place into a marketplace or even an ad system, but...

I'm selling my Dell. Anyone looking for a computer?

It's a good machine, just a year old. It has all the warranties, CDs, manuals, and such.

I'm selling the whole system--the Dell Dimension 2400, 15" flat screen monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and a printer if you want it. And it runs Windows XP Professional, too.

Why am I selling it? Well, it just doesn't do what I need it to do, and I think I want a laptop instead anyway.

I'm presently staring blankly at the amazon.com screen wondering if it's worth me putting it up there. Plus, when I follow their instructions, I don't see the "sell yours here" button they mention. Hmph. Maybe I'll put an ad in the newspaper. That might work...

Comment here or email me if you're interested: twig_e13@lycos.com.

More on Counterfeiting

Making money

But counterfeiters don't need perfect facsimiles. What they need are fakes that pass cursory examinations in typical transactions. Until the early 1990s, achieving that involved costly investments in offset presses and engraved plates. Today, a little knowledge and a few commercially available items will suffice. (Nearly all counterfeits detected in Canada are produced by photocopiers and ink-jet printers.) "I don't consider very many criminals to be masterminds," says Haywood. "If all I have to do all day is lie around on the couch and think about it, I can figure out how to circumvent the system and make myself a note."

The Beastie Boys Strike Again

Yesterday was the fourth of July, and so like everyone else in America I waited till around 6pm, and headed off to find some fireworks. After stopping to ask a few random pedestrians directions, I found some, and I have to say it was one of the best displays I've seen in a long time. The explosions and lights were even synchronized with various patriotic songs and ballads.
Er...most of them were patriotic anyway. I have to say that I was a little surprised when, after a stunning rendition of "America the Beautiful," the music smoothly transitioned into "Intergalactic" by the Beastie Boys.

I heard several people around me mutter such things as "Beastie Boys?", "What the hell?" , and "I think I'm going to be sick." Ok, so that last one was me. But I could tell other people were thinking it. I really did hear someone behind me say "At least it's not "Brass Monkey" though. The Beastie Boys are fine to listen to in your car, at the occasional drunken party, or by yourself in a padded soundproof room. But at a fireworks display with 40,000 people watching? Somehow, it just doesn't seem right.

Pittsburgh Folk Festival

For those of you who don't already know, I am a Tamburitzan. A Tamburitzan (or tammie for short) is an ethnic dancer from the Eastern European area. Specifically Croatia. Well, Pittsburgh annually holds a Folk Festival to celebrate the different ethnicities that make up PA. It is being held at Station Square at the Chevrolet Amphitheater. I'll be down there all weekend either sitting in the display booth for the Croatians or performing on stage for the Croatians (Friday night and Sunday afternoon). The festival lasts all this weekend and ends Sunday with a concert by the Poverty Neck Hillbillies. Tickets are $8 and children 12 and under get in free...

So if you are looking for something to do, come on down and have a good time. There will be food, drinks, and fun for all ages!!! Hope to see you there!

Governor Rendell to visit Greensburg

I just got this message from Dean Gawelek:

Governor Ed Rendall will be visiting Greensburg on Saturday, April 17th. He will be making an important announcement at approximately 12:30 at P-lot (parking lot in front of the train station). It would great if you could come to hear the announcement. Wearing Seton Hill shirts, jackets or hats would also be a plus.

I have two thoughts... something related to Seton Hill's downtown expansion, or something related to the Greensburg-Pittsburgh maglev train. My thought is that the governor probably wouldn't bother coming out if this were just regarding the expansion of Seton Hill... and if this were a Seton Hill event, Dr. Gawelek wouldn't suggest that we wear Seton Hill garb.

My wife scheduled an outing to the zoo this Saturday, so I doub t I'll be able to make it to this event.

Cats Need Homes

Posted for Kristin Lippincott

I have 2 cats that I need to get rid of….one is 6 years old, and the other a little over a year.

They are both well-mannered and actually pretty lazy. I have had them both since they were 6 weeks old, and they are very healthy. I am moving and can not keep them. To avoid taking them to the Humane Society, I am trying to find a good home for them. I am willing to separate them if necessary.

If you, or anyone you know, can help me out PLEASE have them contact me! Thanks a ton in advance!!!

Get Your Rest

Yahoo! News - Study: Sleep Essential for Creativity

For the first time, scientists say they have proved what creative minds have known all along: that our sleeping brains continue working on problems that baffle us during the day, and that the right answer may come more easily after eight hours of rest. .... Scientists at the University of Luebeck found that volunteers taking a simple math test were three times more likely than sleep-deprived participants to figure out a hidden rule for converting the numbers into the right answer if they had eight hours of sleep. The findings appear in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

Fisking of "Aint it Cool News" review of "Matrix 3"

If you've seen the movie, you might enjoy reading Lileks fisk (that is, brutally rebutt) Harry Knowles' review of "The Matrix Redundant" (or whatever it's really called)

LILEKS (James) The Bleat

Mr. Knowles is often held up as an example of New Media, one of those outsiders who've wrested the mike from the old tired media. Usually I support that sort of thing, but if ever there was an argument for restricting the role of Critic to the white-gloved aesthetes, the Lucius Beebes, the Jay Shermans, the guys who, y'know, have done it, with a laidy, nudge nudge, it's Harry Knowles. His review of Matrix 3 proves that if you can't say something coherent, just say it in purple-tinted boldface 20-point Arial

I am so sick of Bush!!!!!!!!

I am so sick and tired of Bush! He has to go! I can't take it anymore! The economy is falling apart! Gas, water, light, and god knows what else is higher than before. I'm scared. Tuitions are going up everywhere and scolarships are going down. Bush is a racist and a bastard and all he does is take from the poor and give to the rich. Now he's trying to take medicare away from the sick. It's f****** ridiculous. I just recently read an article by Robert Pear of the NY Times that said that the White House aka Bush and the rest of his rich idiots are trying to cut medicare and succeeding. They are cutting back the genreal use of tax revenue for medicare too. If the taxes are not paying for those in need to get the medication that is either keeping them alive or preventing them from going crazy; than what the f***is the taxes paying for. Let me guess the oh so important and necessary war so that we can save other people in a country that is not even ours and is causing the unnecessary deaths of so many young Americans. Sorry I forgot Bush is right everything he does is good for this nation. Get the hell out of here! That's a bunch of bulls***!!! He is a joke and he has to go. Since he suspiciously and unfairly got into office, myself and my family have done nothing but struggle. He doesn't care about anything but trying to win a war that should not have even happened. And now thousands and thousands of Americans are going to die because they can't afford drugs and treatment that will save their damn lives. My mother has lupus and she cannot work because of a disease that cannot be cured. So he's telling me its her fault she has a genetic disease that prevents her from being able to walk or move on many occassions and Bush is trying to stop her from getting help. My mother will die if she doesn't take a certain pill at a certain time. And he wants to take that pill away because he f***** up!!!!!!! I don't know what many of you think, but if you feel that this is acceptable than don't even think about making a post to comment because your existence is irrelevant, let alone your opinion, so don't worry about it. But for those of you who care and have family members that our suffering because of Bush. I ask only one favor from you. VOTE!!!!! Your vote counts! Get him the hell OUT!! VOTE! Please!!! I know candidates are few and can't be trusted but please look closely and choose someone else before more people have to suffer. I'm sorry this wasn't a journalistic post, but if it means anything Robert Pear did a thorough job with the article.

By donating to this cause, your money will help improve treatment options and help find a cure. Thank you!
