Video Game Culture and Theory (J-Term 2010)

It is an online J-term course, so you can take it from anywhere where there’s internet access - you don’t have to be at SHU during J-Term.

In the last decade, a growing number of scholars have noticed the importance of video games to modern culture, as a form of story telling, as a form of teaching, and as a form of social commentary.

This course explores the nature of "fun," how "fun" is created and used by game designers, and how games reflect and shape the values of the culture in which they exist.

In order for journalists to gain a loyal following of truth seeking readers they need to establish their infatuation with telling it. Mentioned by Dr. Jerz : journalists who who are out to expose a hidden truth are often met with much opposition, so it is important for facts to check out. A full-proof argument in the face of a corrupt opposition is sure to stand the test of time. It is also important for expository pieces to lack the personal opinion of the writer so they are not made out to seem like some kind of personal vendetta.

"Armstrong man shoots self after wounding estranged wife"

Michelle Cousins of Manor was attacked by her husband, Wesley Cousins of Washington township. Prior to this, she filed a protection from abuse order against him.

The incident took place when he went to her house armed with a pistol. He fired several shots, causing damage to her abdomen and hand. She called 911 and was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Nothing has been released from the hospital.

Her husband was found dead in a bedroom with a self-inflicted bullet wound to the chest.

This is really all the article says about the actual shooting. The rest is about domestic violence cases in the past month or so. It just elaborates on that for a while. I don't want to bore you with it like they did to me. Here's the link:http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/leadertimes/news/s_647620.html

It just seems like they needed to fill a bunch of space so they spewed out a bunch of information.

What if I just did that?

Pajamas are awesome! I like cake. Agh. Now there's cake on my pajamas. That's not cool.

Everyone likes cake and pajamas, but it's an understanding between humans and should never be written. It's also an understanding that domestic violence is bad, therefore it doesn't need constant mention. The story itself indicates that domestic violence leads to attempted murder/suicide, therefore it's bad. I'm sorry for rabbling. It really annoyed me.

Thursday afternoon, small groups led by faculty and staff members led a discussion of the book over a box lunch.

Afterward, participants packed Cecilian Hall, where panelists read their own statements of personal belief.

Why So Serious?

This profile has an interesting introduction and it makes me want to read the rest, but it just seems so serene and serious. I almost want the author to make it more gory and detailed. I am told that the ducks are being bred to be eaten, but it just seems like it's supposed to be an everyday occurence. I am definitely not a vegetarian, but I have not ever eaten duck before. Alice Waters is described to be this God like restaurant business connoisseur, but she just seems like a duck killer to me. I am not saying she is a bad person, but why try to hide the details of what she is doing to make her successful.

Obituaries Can be Bad Publicity

Most obituaries that I have read have been short and sweet. This obituary seems to go on to tell the entire life story of Marie Byrne. I am not intending to say that Marie Bryne's life should not be celebrated, but I believe that her obituary should emphasize the importance of her life rather than the fact that she had a family friend that the kids called "Uncle Mary." Her obituary should be entirely dedicated to her and not the lives of others. Obviously her surviving relatives are important to her life, but I do not think that a newspaper should print anything else about them.

However, I do believe that showing how Marie Byrne was a down to earth, "tough" woman was very important within the context of the obituary. Readers should be able to comprehend the impact of someone's life on society without having to know what they made for dinner every night.
