To get hired, you need experience. To get that experience, apply for an internship. Here's an interesting one...

OpEd News, one of the higher traffic media sites on the Internet, is looking for qualified
interns who have backgrounds in journalism or are currently majoring in
journalism or related areas in colleges (including political science, history,
sociology, and anthropology). Interns will be able to work in areas of their
personal interest (e.g., politics, music, art, the environment, etc.)
since the site deals with a diversity of topics.

One of their selling points is "OpEdNews is one of only 4,500 media sites
crawled by GOOGLE NEWS." I should point out that our own Setonian is also crawled by Google News. Nevertheless, the internship looks good.

Things I wish I knew before taking an internship off-campus

As part of a term project for the class EL200: Media Lab, I
have decided to create a reference document for students engaging in internship
work off-campus. My name is Evan Reynolds and I am a senior Journalism/New
Media major who attempted an internship near downtown Pittsburgh, but failed to complete the course
due to the things I didn’t know about the “real world” before going in. School
does not teach many of these things and I firmly believe it is impossible to
really learn these lessons in a classroom. I am not in any way trying to teach
“the real world” with this list of resources and bits of advice, but I feel
that giving these pieces of what I learned and warning about possible pitfalls and
issues will help future students be more aware of what the work world is like
outside of a sheltered university environment.

It's Game Week - so read some video game journalism!

The UK’s Guardian newspaper has proclaimed a Games Week for
their paper. The Guardian has withheld nothing from this celebration: they flooded their website with
new articles from the greats in VG journalism and VG creators. It’s a must read.

Richard Bartle, writer and game creator, sums up the direction of video games in his article:

“I'm talking to you, you self-righteous politicians and
newspaper columnists, you relics who beat on computer games: you've already
lost. Enjoy your carping while you can, because tomorrow you're gone.”

Bartle cites that nearly half of the UK population have
grown up playing video games, and as the years pass the percentage will keep
growing in favor of gamers and I bet the same goes for the USA. The next generation of journalists and politicians will all have grown up with video games as a massively influential media.

Each article on the site is another look into the depths of video
game journalism. Here are just a few of the highlight articles: Why Gaming will Survive an Economic Meltdown, Advertising in Video Games, and How the Sims put nongamers in the Top Slot. What a great acknowledgment of video games as cultural relevant media. We'll see games popping up in news broadcasts more and more frequently.

For the most part The Guardian is only publishing Games Week articles online, but who
cares, that’s where the gamers are...for now.

Final year of high school brings restlessness - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

The Tribune-Review has an interesting article about senioritis. (Don't start relaxing now!)

Lauren Miller, 19, agrees. She says the pressure of her senior year in
high school was intense, with her advanced-placement classes. Yet,
equally intense was the temptation to succumb to "senioritis" and slack
off, because she was burned out and preoccupied with college.

In her math class -- not the Greensburg resident's forte -- the disease did kick in.

"I didn't want to be there," says Miller. She is now a freshman
at Seton Hill University, majoring in Spanish. "I really had to just
force myself to go to math class.

"A lot of people in my high school were just so eager to get out of (school)," she says.

Don't slack off, even though it's tempting, Miller advises high-school seniors.

"Even though it's their last semester, those grades are going to count
and they're going to show up on your transcripts," she says. "If you
start slacking off the last semester of high school, you're not going
to be prepared for high school."

Giant Eagle accuses chocolatiers of price fixing - Tribune-Review

Tribune-Review:

With control of the chocolate market concentrated in the hands of so
few companies, and the technical difficulties of entering the market
and merchandising new products, "the chocolate candy product market was
ripe for collusion," Giant Eagle claims.

The supermarket chain contends the three suppliers increased average
prices 16 percent from December 2004 to March 2005, even though there
was no evidence of increases in raw material prices.

Hershey and Nestle raised their candy prices by an average of 11.7 percent this year, Giant Eagle said.

The suit cites a 2007 investigation by the Canadian Competition Bureau,
which claimed Nestle, Hershey and Mars conspired to fix prices in
Canada. Canadian authorities said an informant described meetings among
top food executives that led to the price fixing.

- - - - - -

The Holocaust/ Genocide reading is still planned for March 13. 2008 @ 7:30 p.m. in sully hangout (where SHU has it's movie night). Darren is donating food for the event, and it's going to be a coffe house setting. We have 10 readers so far ranging from faculty to students who will be presenting poetry and prose. We are estimating like 5 min. per person, but obviously with poetry we are going to have to make some exceptions, haha. The flyers were also taken care of (THANKS GIRLS!!! ) and they look wonderful. We're titling the event Silent Voices Heard: A genocide reading.

If you are planning on reading, you need to acquire the following asap. Title of piece, author, date, brief background history. This is to be sent to Mary Clark at cla7691@setonhill.edu by March 4th. We are also planning on sending out a global email, posting it on the newsfeed on the main web page, emailing faculty, putting posters up around campus and in teachers mailboxes, giving updates to RA's, etc. I know some teachers are also giving extra credit for attendance.

If you would like to help set up for the event, or read, PLEASE EMAIL ME (unless I already know of course from your attendance at the last meeting). I really think that this is going to be a GREAT event, so I hope to hear back from all of you soon!

Oh, and the CarrerWorks English Major Awareness event will be held on March 9th, 2008 @ 7:00 p.m. We haven't ironed out a lot of the details yet because of our focuse on the event above, but if you would like to help, please let me know in advance!
